HYDROCEPHALUS

is a condition in which there is a lack


of absorption, blockage of flow or
overproduction of the cerebral spinal
fluid that is found inside the
ventricles of the brain. This may
result in a build up of fluid that can
cause the pressure inside of the
head to increase and the skull bones
to expand to a larger than normal.
Causes:
- blockage of the CSF flow inside of the head
- problems with the body absorbing the CSF
- overproduction of the CSF
- tumors, infection, prematurity, bleeding inside the head, birth injury and
abnormal blood vessel formation inside of the head
Signs and Symptoms:
- a ful or bulging fontanel
- increasing head circumference
- seizures
- bulging eyes and an inability of the baby to look upward with the head facing
forward
- very noticeable scalp veins
- very noticeable scalp veins
- increased irritability
- high pitched cry
- poor feeding
- projectile vomiting
- sleepiness or less alert than usual
- developmental delays
Diagnostic Tests:
- X-ray, is a diagnostic test which uses invisible electromagnetic energy beams to
produce images of internal tissues, bones and organs onto film.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging- a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination
of large magnets, radiofrequencies and a computer to produce detailed images
of organs and structures within the body.
- Computed Tomography Scan- a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a
combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional
images often called as slices, both horizontal y and vertically of the body.
Nursing and Medical Managements:
- prevent injury
- promote skin integrity
- prevent infection
- promote growth and development
- reduce family anxiety
- provide family teaching
Complications:
- infection
- shunt malfunction
- bleeding
- fever
- vomiting
- irritability
- irritability
- redness and swelling along the area of the tubing.
