Capstone Proposal
Overview
For my capstone project, I will be interning with Dr. Robert Roye at the Regional
Orthopedic Center in Waxahachie, for three hours once a week. I will shadow and learn from Dr.
Roye and his staff. This internship has opened the door to many opportunities, such as working
with his sister, Melinda Miller, in the surgical unit observing surgeries and working alongside
registered nurses. For my project, I want to take the information I have learned and educate
middle schoolers about their bones and what it takes to surgically repair them.

I wanted to spend my internship working with doctors and nurses so that I could get a
feel for my career choice. My first internship is with Dr. Roye at his surgery center in
Waxahachie. His staff has welcomed me into the medical career and they have allowed to me to
observe x-rays being performed, broken bones being set, stitches pulled out, shots of cortisone
being administered, and other assorted ailments being treated. This hands-on approach has
opened my eyes to seeing what the doctors and nurses do day in and day out. Once I stepped into
the world of these doctors and nurses, I realized how broad the medical spectrum really is. There
are so many areas that I havent even considered. Its like a brand new world has opened up for
me.
Aspirations
This internship has allowed me to work up close and personal and mingle with the
patients. These patients have been so kind to allow me to see them even when they are in a lot of
pain. I like being the person that offers them comfort. The nurses focus more on the patients
injuries, and I like being able to talk to the patients and help them keep their mind off their pain.
I also have observed that the nurses have a closer relationship with the patients than the doctors
because they are able to spend more time with them one on one. I like that aspect of the nursing
career. Sometimes, its not just medicine that you have to offer the patients. Kindness and
comfort may be some of the best cures that the patients receive.
Because I have been working so closely with doctors and nurses, they are allowing me
to begin observing surgeries during my internship. I will be working alongside Dr. Robert Royes
sister, Melinda Miller CRNA, DNP. Mrs. Miller is an anesthesiologist and owns the Bluebonnet
Surgical Center in Waxahachie. This experience will help me gain more knowledge in the field

of surgeries and how the doctors and nurses work closely together to perform these surgeries. I
will be able to observe them as they work and see how they prepare for such surgeries, such as
hip and knee replacements. It will be even more fascinating to see the end results of such hard
work when the patients return to the center for physical therapy. I will be able to monitor their
progress and see for myself how successful their surgeries were.
Future Aspirations
I also have aspirations to be able to volunteer in an emergency room setting. I think that
the quick pace of helping patients when there is so much going on offers a different kind of
nursing. You have to be able to think fast on your feet and help as many of the patients as
possible. I want to be able to experience that type of emergency care when it becomes so natural
for you that you can just spit out the information that is needed and help others without blinking
an eye. It seems to me that will be a perfect initiation to the field of medicine. In its own sort of
way it is a sink or swim atmosphere.
In addition, working in a trauma unit with chaos going on around you would also be a
great learning experience, but this requires more extensive training. To have someones life
hanging on by a thread where you are ultimately the one that helps save them would be a great
honor but a great amount of stress and pressure.
Passion
Last year my dad was involved in a horrible car accident. When the car flipped, my dad
was ejected and the car rolled on top of his legs. He was in the I.C.U. for a month and received
unbelievable care. After being on the patients family side of the trauma unit, I now have a new
appreciation for what these doctors and nurses go through and I am thankful that they decided to

choose such an important career. I believe that because I have had an experience that most
people havent had and wouldnt want to have, I now have a better understanding of what
patients and their families need from their doctors and nurses. I will always be able to draw from
my experience of watching my dad receive care in the I.C.U. to help me be a better nurse in the
future.
Benefits & Purpose
Currently, my dream is to become a neonatal nurse. I want to attend college and earn my
Bachelors degree. I will then pursue nursing as my career. Once I am accepted into a nursing
program, I hope to enjoy finding my niche and seeing what actually fits my personality. It may
not be working with babies in the end, but until I am actually immersed into different fields, I
wont know exactly what the best avenue should be. So far with this internship, I have realized
that there are so many possibilities that the choices that I thought were narrowed down to just a
few have now been expanded. The possibilities for my future in nursing seem endless. The
purpose and benefits of this internship is to gain more knowledge on what its like to work
alongside nurses and doctors while gaining experience working with patients.
Final Presentation & Measure of Success
For my project, I would like to take the information I have gathered during my internship
to teach a science class at Maypearl Intermediate about bones and what happens during a surgical
procedure. I plan to have the students build bones out of clay having different colors represent
different parts of the hip and knee bones to help them learn better. The lesson will be interactive,
and I would also like to have the kids take a pre and post test to measure what they have learned
from the lesson.

Audience
My main audience will be the students and teacher that is hearing the presentation. In
addition, I would like to present to the staff of Regional Orthopedic Sports Medicine Center and
show them what all I have accomplished throughout the year with their help.
Research Paper
For my research paper, I would like to observe the robotic arm that is being utilized at
Baylor Scott and White and compare it to manual surgeries to see if the pros outweigh the cons
of using the robotic arm vs. actual human preformed surgeries.
