Mini-Unit Assignment- Cardiovascular Disease

There are a number of reasons as to why stress and nutrition lead to heart disease. There is a correlation between the three but
lets break it down. When a persons stress level is high, that contributes to high blood pressure. When the blood pressure is over
a certain point (ex. 140/90), that reaches the stage of Hypertension, which leads to possible cardiac arrest. The link between
stress and heart disease is not yet clear, but when one is dealing with stress, they resort to unhealthy tactics like alcohol and
drugs. It is important to make sure that we take care of our bodies properly so that we are able to prevent hypertension, high
blood pressure, and of course heart disease. Some ways to prevent this from occurring is simply by exercising, avoid maximum
alcohol consumption, and just living a healthy diet.
For nutrition, it is vital that we each have a healthy diet, starting at an early age. Reason is because the sooner we take care of
our bodies, the more beneficial it will be once we are at an older age. According to Caregiver.com, there are three issues that
must be faced early on when choosing a diet that has the heart-conscious in mind. They are: Keeping as ideal a weight as
possible, decreasing saturated fat intake, and reducing sodium levels (which is better for our cholesterol intake). Another issues
that also contributes to cardiovascular disease is our cholesterol. Cholesterol is a waxy-fat like substance that the body needs.
But when there is too much, build up on the artery walls will occur, that is called Atherosclerosis. High cholesterol levels places
one at risk for artery build up, but it can also cause strokes. Here is a small explanation as to how high cholesterol levels are
contributed to heart disease. We all need enough oxygen and blood supply to reach out heart and chest. When oxygen is blocked
or slowed, this causes a heart attack, strokes, and chest pains: Hence, cardiovascular disease.
Men tend to have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease because of how they cope with stress. They will resort to excessive
alcohol consumption and smoking. In order for that ratio of men being diagnosed with heart disease, there needs to be a huge
change with coping mechanisms to stress and starting to live a healthier life. As for Keisha, I would definitely advise her to take
better care of herself now. It will be so much easier to deal with in the future if she starts the internal and external care for her
body. This includes healthy eating habits and better coping mechanisms when she is under stress.

Mini-Unit Assignment- Protecing Yourself From Violence Ideas

In my city, there is a group or team that was created by California State University of North Ridge. It is called Domestic
Violence Advocacy and Counseling (DVAC) by the Family Justice Center. This group provides a 24-Hr line of support. Not everyone
that experiences violence in their lives whether domestic, verbal, physical, and rape will have someone to talk to. A feeling of
loneliness and fear are two definite emotions that someone will feel. This group provides a quick service to allow anyone that has
recently experience such violence to talk to. Although it is not a face to face, it is a a dependable source. This source provides
more information on what you can do to prevent such occurrences.

85% of domestic violence victims are women; 15% are men

Mini-Unit Assignment Reflections

I have never been one to own a planner that has my daily schedule inside, nor have I ever kept track of what I do
throughout the week. I am the type of person who will just go with the flow and expect the unexpected. The importance of
tracking my schedule has never crossed my mind. However, as little and crazy as this sounds, the 168 Hour Assignment has
really helped me gain a different perspective. Not only did this assignment help me with my weekly schedule, but it also helped
me use my time more wisely. I noticed that I do not get as much sleep as I should and I do not have enough time to exercise as
much as I want to. My free time is after 5 pm since I work from 9-5 every day and it is used for homework. Weekends could and
should be used for physical activity, but I use weekends to take care of my priorities like bills, errands, etc. I rarely have any time
for my social life because when I get home from work, I have homework and I just feel like relaxing all night.
Overall, I just feel like this assignment has really opened my eyes and I have a better idea of how I use my time. My goal is to
start using my time more wisely, focus on my priorities and what makes me happy.
Now, with the cardiovascular disease assignment, I have gained a lot of knowledge. The mini-case study has had me do a
ton of research on what causes things like heart attacks, simple chest pains, and so on. Being that I am pursuing the medical
profession, this information has really benefited me. In the medical profession, you need to know everything about the body,
need to know what symptoms are related to what diseases, you also need to know how diagnose. Its vital that you know every
function of every organ in the body. This assignment benefited me by giving me knowledge of cholesterol intake, sodium levels,
clogged arteries, as well as any other symptoms that cause heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.
