Aim: To investigate the relationship between

the period of a simple pendulum and the
length
Inference: The period of a simple pendulum
is dependent on its length

Hypothesis: the longer the pendulum

thread, the longer the period of its ossilation
Variables:
Manipulated: Length of the pendulum
Responding: Period of the pendulum
Constant: Mass of the pendulum bob
Apparatus: Retord stand with clamp,
Stopwatch, Protactor ,Brass bob and a metre
ruler
Materials: 100cm thread and 2 small pieces
of plywood

Diagram:

Procedure:
1) the end of one thread was tied to a brass bob
and the other end was clamped to the retort clamp
with the help of two pieces of plywood
2) The thread was adjusted so that the length from
the point it was clamped to the centre of the bob, l
is 10.0cm
3 the pendulum was oscillated from a small angle
of about 10
4) the time,t , was measured for 20 complete
oscillations and the timing was recorded.

5 the time,t 2, was measured for 20 complete

oscillations and the timing was recorded
6) The mean of t1 and t2 was was determined and
recorded as the value of t.Subsequently, the time
taken for one complete oscillation was determined
which gave the value of the period of oscillation ,T
7) procedure 3 to 7 was repeated for L=30.0cm,
40.0cm and 50.0cm,
8) the data was recorded in a table
10) a graph of period,T against L was plotted

Conclusion:hypothesis is accepted. the longer
the length of thependulum, the longer the period of
oscillation. The hypothesis is proven valid.
Precaution :
1. The experiment was carried out in an enclosed
room to avoid the influence of wind.
3. Avoid parallax error by make sure the position of

the eyes is perpendicular to the reading on the

stopwatch
