Cloud Gate Dance Theater is a contemporary based group in Taiwan

Founded by Lin Hwai-min in 1973 and later shared management with his
protg, Lo Man-fei
Lin Hwai-min is the choreographer of Cloud Gate and his most famous work is
Moon Water
Lin led Cloud Gates first public performance at Zhongshan Hall in Taipei in 1972
Cloud Gate is based off Asian Mythology and folklore
Their diverse movement consist of tai chi, meditation, martial arts,
contemporary, and ballet
Known for their international tours (Europe, Asia, North America, and South
America)
They also spend much of their time performing in Taiwan and are known as the
countrys premier dance organization
In August 21, 2003 Taiwans government proclaimed the day Cloud Gate Day
and named the street their company office is on Cloud Gate Lane

Cloud Gate has two other branches other than the main dance company,
Cloud Gate 2 and Cloud Gate Dance School
Cloud Gate 2 tours communities and work with young dancers and
choreographers

- It was founded in 1999

Cloud Gate Dance School was aimed to make dance education more
available to those who wanted to learn about dance

- Founded in 1998
- After the death of Lo Man-fei, Lin ran Cloud Gate 2 until 2014
- Cheng Tsung-lung took the lead of running Cloud Gate 2 and has been a
guest choreographer for the company since 2006

CLOUD GATE THEATER

In 2008, a fire had burnt Cloud Gates warehouse studio
All of the costumes, props, and records dating back to 1975 were destroyed
In order to recover Cloud Gate signed a contract with Taiwans government in order
to use public land to rebuild as long as they were provided with their own funds
-Over 4000 individual and corporate donations, including a donation of $5 million
dollars from the Alphawood Foundation Chicago, made the reconstruction of the
theater possible
Cloud Gates new home includes four performing spaces, a 450 seat theater, two
studios, and a 1500-person capacity outdoor theater
Reopened on April 24, 2015 and have already have had over 100 performances
and 100,000 visitors from worldwide

AWARDS
2003- Cloud Gate opened the Melbourne International Arts Festival
with Cursive II, winning both the Age Critics' Award and the Patrons'
Award
2003- Moon Water was named the best dance of the year by The
New York Times
2006- Cursive: A trilogy was chosen as best choreography of the
year as a result of critics by Ballettanz and Theater Heute

PERSONAL OPINION
In my opinion I think Cloud Gate Dance Theater is a
very aesthetic company. Their movement is fluid and
very precise. I also enjoy that their inspiration comes
from Asian mythology and folklore and I t isnt
something you see everyday with other dance
companies. I admire Lin Hwai-mins talent in a sense
that he can successfully merge tai chi, meditation,
and especially martial arts into contemporary dance.
