PTA and Enhancing International Mindedness

I love our PTA! I wish everyone could have attended the PTA meeting this past week! It was incredible! Our PTA
does so many great things for our school as they strive to support the development of our BIFS community. The
upcoming International Day in May is a great example of the wonderful work they do. (By the way, have you
signed up to lead or be a part of your countries booth for International Day? It would be a shame if all of our 42
countries were not representedhint, hint). One of the great aspects of the monthly PTA meetings is an
educational presentation led by one of the parents about something from Korean culture or from their own
home culture. These presentations have been sensational and the one this past week was magnificent. This past
week, our PTA chairperson, Joy Priedeman shared about her passion for Korean Handicrafts. She discussed and
displayed samples of ceramic, paper, wood, and thread Korean handicraft and the importance of these crafts in
transmitting the rich cultural heritage of Korea. What I found especially meaningful was how natural it was to
have parents from many different countries coming together to learn about other cultures and to share their
experiences. These authentic interactions are exactly what enhancing international mindedness is all about!
Internationally minded people are globally engaged and value intercultural understanding. Being internationally
minded and enhancing our understanding of other cultures is at the heart of a BIFS education. We develop
international mindedness through purposeful approaches to teaching and learning. We desire our students to
develop deeper understandings, attitudes and skills as international students and active global citizens. Students
do this as they explore, discover, reflect and take responsible and respectful actions in response to different
perspectives and cultures. At BIFS, we intentionally provide these teachable moments by ensuring our curriculum
is international with global content that is connected to significant global issues and that our outcomes and
displays of learning incorporate a global perspective. You can see a great example of this on Monday morning
when our MYP students present their personal projects in the gym! Finally, we guide our students to think
reflectively about attitudes, values and dispositions. These reflections and sharing of different perspectives
strengthens everyones international mindedness.
This is just what our PTA is doing! I love our PTA! Way to go!
PS: Dont forget to sign up with the PTA for your countries booth at International Day!

British Embassy Warden Training

Wardens are volunteers working to assist British Nationals. Recently, Kevin Smith (warden for Busan) attended a
meeting/training session with the wardens in Korea led by Graham Nelson, HM Consul from Tokyo and Michael
Kim, Honorary Consul in Busan.
The meeting focused on the Crisis Hub, which is the FCO's consular crisis IT system designed to make it easier to
support British Nationals affected by a crisis overseas.
All British nationals are encouraged to subscribe to Travel Advice which will automatically inform nationals about
any crisis that may occur. This can be accessed at https://www.gov.uk/government/world/south-korea. Brits are
also encouraged to join the embassy on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ukinrok) and Twitter (@UKinKorea) for
regular updates. Please pass on these details to any relevant British contacts and networks.

Supporting Language Development at BIFS

We are honored to be hosting Dr. Virginia Rojas at the school this weekend. Dr. Rojas
will be running a workshop called: Scaffolding and Differentiating Instruction to Support
English Learners. Teachers from across Asia will join with BIFS teachers to attend the
two-day workshop. The aim of the workshop will be to provide additional strategies for
teaching English as Additional Language (EAL) students in mainstream classrooms.
Additionally, Dr. Rojas will be at school from February 26 to 29 to meet with teachers
and leaders and to observe classes across the school. Working closely with our
Language Review Committee, Dr. Rojas will complete a Language Audit and make
recommendations for enhancing and improving language delivery at BIFS. This is part
of our language review and vertical school improvement goals.

Head Lice Reminder

With all of the travel that students do throughout the year and overnight trips that
students attend, it is important to remember to check your child for Lice.
Lice does not transmit disease nor does it mean that a child is unclean. It is
important to understand what head lice is and how to treat it to prevent
infestations from re-occurring.
What is head lice?
Small, wingless insects that live on human hair and feed on human blood to survive
Do not have wings or jumping legs so they CANNOT fly or jump
People get lice from direct hair-to-hair contact
Lay eggs called nits within 1.5cm of scalp

Nits are small, white, and shaped like a sesame seed

Stick to hair and difficult to pull off; do not brush away like dandruff

Commonly found behind ears and the nape of the neck

How to FIND head lice:
Many lice may not cause itching at first; careful inspection is the best way to find
Wet combing is best because it can slow down the lice and make them easier to catch

In a well-lit room, apply hair conditioner onto dry, detangled hair

Comb small sections of hair with a fine-tooth or head lice comb

Wipe conditioner from comb onto paper towel or tissue

Look on tissue and comb for lice and eggs

Repeat combing all over head for at least five minutes

If lice or eggs are found, the hair should be treated

How to TREAT head lice:
Treatment should begin immediately when head lice are found
Purchase lice treatment shampoo called Licend () or Ezabri()at a local pharmacy
Use on dry hair for a full 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
Treatment only kills live lice, so nits must be manually removed.
After one treatment, student may return to school but is required to be checked in nurses office that day
Removal of nits must be done every day for two weeks after 1st treatment via wet combing or with fingers
2nd treatment is done 7-10 days (no earlier as shampoo is very strong) after 1st treatment
Two treatments and follow-up checks with nit removal is the best way to make sure lice are gone

New MHS Schedule for 2016-2017

The MHS Schedule Committee has been working on a new schedule for the MHS to be implemented next year.
They have produced something that works best for our students and have come up with a rotating block
schedule that should work wonderful for our classes next year. This is how it works
Each day students will have four classes. These classes will meet every other day and they will change times. For
example, if you are a student and you have Math during your A Block, you will have it on day 1, 3, 5, and 7 of
the 8 day rotation. On day 1, you will have it at 8:30, on day 3, you will have it at 1:40, on day 5 you will have it
at 11:40, and on day 7 it will be at 10:10. I know this sounds confusing, but after a week or so, students will be
able to understand it and explain it to you.
We will also have a half day schedule and a schedule for testing days so that we wont need to do our MAP and
ISA testing during a class. You can look at the chart below to see how it will work. If you want more explanation,
please contact your principal.

MUN Conference
Please help me congratulate the students who participated in the Global Education City Model United Nations
(GECMUN) conference in Jeju this past weekend. First time MUNers were: Jade Foster (9), Simon Park (9), and
Yubin Kwon (9). Experienced members were: Finn Donahue (9), Hannah Yoon (9), Pernille Melilla (11), and Jeany
Shin (12). Students were able to participate a lot in this style conference and everyone had many opportunities
to present, negotiate, and debate their ideas. The committees were exciting and consisted of President
Kennedys committee in 1962 regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis, Hunger Games, Olympic Games committee,
NATO, UN on crime and Somalian pirates, and Scotland Yard.
Some highlights were: Although, Jeany Shin (12) unsuccessfully tried to kill her character during the political
turmoil of President Snows death during the Hunger Games, she still received Honourable Mention in her
committee due to her influence and great speaking. In another committee Simon Park (9) submitted a directive
to assassinate the next president, became the next president, and was assassinated by his own directive.
As an MUN team, we had a great time, and students thoroughly enjoyed participating.

same age, height, and weight, providing insight into their physical growth and development. The vision
screening is a tool to identify possible visual problems and make appropriate referrals for a professional exam.
Early detection and intervention is important if a child has any potential health problems that could interfere with
their education.
These screenings will be conducted annually at school and the information will be shared with you as well as
remain in the student's health file year-to-year to help track their growth. Students bodies are changing rapidly
during these Middle School years and this provides a great opportunity to promote health and wellness as well
as the importance of healthy lifestyle habits.
I encourage all students to participate in the health screenings! Please complete the emailed permission form or
follow this link to give permission for your child/children to participate.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact the nurse at nurse@bifskorea.org.

Personal Project Showcase Monday, Feb 29

Save This Date! On Monday, February 29, you are invited to the Grade 10 Personal Project Showcase. Students
will be exhibiting their Personal Projects in the gym from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm and then again from 6:00 pm - 8:30
pm.
The Personal Project is an extended inquiry into a topic of the students own choosing. It gives the students an
opportunity to put into practice and strengthen their ATL skills (Approaches to Learning) skills and consolidate
some of their subject specific knowledge in addition to developing knowledge of a topic or skill that is personally
relevant to them. The students have made inquiries into very diverse and interesting topics: creative writing,
photography, website design, sports, motorcycles, travel blogs, painting, racism in sports, fashion, learning a
language, astronomy, education, etc.
You can help the students by visiting their displays and asking them about how the Personal Project has
expanded their horizons and helped them develop their Learner Profile traits, improve the learning skills and
given them a different perspective.
Come by inspired!

Grade Eleven DP Extended Essay Camps March 5 / April 9

Our Grade Eleven students are working hard to complete their 4000 word Extended Essays. The Extended Essay
is a central requirement of the two-year IB Diploma Programme. The majority of their major papers will be
completed by April 22nd. To support the students, Extended Essay camps have been set up in the school library
on Saturdays. The first camp ran on February 13th and was a great success. Twelve students spent seven hours
in the library, solidly working on their Extended Essays. Grade Eleven Parents, please circle your calendars and
remind your sons and daughters of the upcoming EE camps on March 5th and April 9th. (No tents or sleeping
bags required.) Our goal is to support students with completing this major IB task before university applications
and major assessments are due in the fall.

BIFS Bears Volleyball wins big at KISAC RED in Jeju and BIFS
The Bears Volleyball program entered three teams into the girls KISAC tournament hosted at BIFS this year. The
Girls A team won the tournament taking the final game against KIS Jeju with relative ease. The Match was a best
3 out of 5 game in which the bears won in four games! Game, Set, Match... Bears.! Congratulations to the
Bear players and coaches!
The BIFS B and C teams competed in the Silver division against teams from ISK and KIS Jeju. Our BIFS B team
won the Silver division final against our BIFS C team which was a great moment to see these teams go head to
head as they are practice partners during the week. At any rate, I would like to personally congratulate all of
these girls on the amazing amount of Growth that they have shown thus far in the season. Keep it up!! Both
Bears teams edged out the other and finished first and second in the Silver division! Way to go!
