Materials:

Assignment sheets (1 per group)
Closing Response Questions (1per person)
11x17 Paper for posters (unless students want to get their own)

Preparation:
Book laptop cart
Get materials needed
Adaptations:
I have simplified the activity for this lesson. I have changed the wording and made it very simple
and basic, as well as changed/gotten rid of some of the requirements. It is a simpler version of
the same task, but at a much easier level for the students who are ESL and have a harder time
understanding.
I am going to try and use Google translate to give instructions of task to some students.
Lesson Procedure:
Intro
Review competition in a simpler sense as I sort of rushed over that a bit in the previous
lesson.
To do this I have created a brief PowerPoint that compares pictures of different types of
products/companies. Ex. Nike vs. Adidas shoes, Abercrombie & Fitch vs. Old Navy
stores, etc.
Body
Students will have the opportunity to choose their own groups of 3 (however, if it
becomes too difficult or an issue I will make them).
Once the groups are made they will be assigned a product type.
(Fast Food/Coffee/Pop or Water)
Students will then have to research other companies that already exist who sell the same
products. This will give them ideas as to what they might want to do, and what they are
up against.
Once their research is complete they can begin by establishing a name/logo and coming
up with different products to sell/their prices.
Students need to have all of the elements that I have outlined included somewhere on
their final product.
Once they have all of their information figured out, students can begin creating their
posters.
Closure
Students will hand in their final products on Friday March 14th (possible extension
depending how far they get in class) at the beginning of class.
I will have them include a response to what they have learned about competition, how
have their opinions/thoughts about companies and how they compete with one another
for business has changed, and what the hardest part of this assignment was in order to get

an overall understanding of their thoughts/feelings towards the idea of competition in

economics.
Assessment:
There is a checklist (scaled) attached to the assignment that the students receive, that I will be
using to grade this. It is based on criteria I set out for them that shows the extent of their
knowledge about competition and what factors can effect it.
