Quarter 3: Research Phase

Big Idea: You will pick a country by a draft system in class. You will spend Quarter 3 researching
this country and Quarter 4 producing a museum exhibit based on your research. The following
rubric is for the Quarter 3 research process. You will submit a 3-ring notebook with all of the
components listed below.
Using scholarly research, find information about your country in regard to these topics. Avoid
repetition within topics.

Create a graphic organizer (flow chart, concept map) that


explains the early history of your country including information
on native populations, migration patterns, early signs of
civilization, etc. This can be neatly drawn or typed.
Determine the 5 most important events in your nations history
before 1850. Write a detailed explanation of how each event
impacted politics, economics and/or society within your
country. Explanations must be 1 fully developed paragraph in
length and include historical detail.
Your response may include answers to the following questions:
Did your country control other lands? Was your country
controlled by another nation? What were the results of
colonization for your country? Explanations must be at least 1
fully developed paragraph in length and include historical
detail.
Choose 4 of the following 8 topics: Leadership, Economy,
Conflict, Religion, Culture, Technology, Geography,
Disease/Disaster. For each topic, write at least a paragraph
explaining how one aspect of this topic as affected your
country through time. For example, when writing about the
economy, you could write about the history of a specific
import/export important to your country. Include at least 5
specific historical details per topic.
Academic students: at least 6 sources; Honors students: at
least 8 sources. Pairs would have double the citations. Cite all
sources you used in the research process. Your citations need
to be in MLA format! Choose sources that are scholarly and
provide reliable information.
Create a T-chart that provides information on the positive and
negative aspects of your country. This could include anything
from decisions of leaders, natural resources, treatment of
minorities, accomplishments, warfare, cultural contributions,
etc. Each side should have at least five bulleted pieces of
information.
Find interesting anecdotes about the history or culture of your
country. Write 2-3 sentences explaining each fun fact. You may
write up to 5 for one point each.
All of the above components are typed, and completed with
care. It is clear that time and effort went into your research. All
