firstdebtor'sprisonhasbeencreatedandthatthisisafrequentlyoverlooked

BureausofJusticeStatisticsreportsthateachyearmorethan65,000offenders

incarcerationratehaseffectsontheUnitedStatessocietyasawhole.The
authorsupportsthisbyshowingtheimpactthatithasonthegovernment
spendingbudget.Asaresult,lessmoneyisavailabletospendoneducation,
healthcare,economicdevelopment,stateandlocalpoliceandotherkey
governmentinterventionsandservicestoaidhistoricallydisadvantaged

families,specifically,familiesofpoorminoritymen.Havingaparentgoto
prisonisacommoneventforsomepoorminoritychildrenwhichcan

influencethechildrennegatively.Thisleadschildrentobeingmore
vulnerabletoleadalifeofcrimeandmorebrokenfamilies.Theauthors
suggestthatmorecommitmentsneedtobemade,notjustinpolicyreforms,
butinprovidingbettereducation,publichealth,andemployment
opportunitiesoflowskilledmenandwomen.Bynotjustfocusingonreforms
