LatheLatheisaveryancienttoolanditsfirstusedatesbackto1300BCinEgypt.LathewasalsoknownandusedinAssyriaandGreece.Ancient
Romanscametoknowaboutthismachineandtheyfurtherdevelopedthismachine.Duringthemedievalperiod,theuseofthismachinehadspreadtomost
partsofEuropeanditwasduringtheIndustrialrevolutionwhenthismachinegainedpopularitywithitsuseinalltheindustries.Afterthedevelopmentof
electronics,automatedlatheshavebeendeveloped.EvolutionofLatheThefirstlathewasasimplelathewhichwasisnowreferredtoastwopersonlathe.
Onepersonwouldturnthewoodworkpieceusingropeandtheotherpersonwouldshapetheworkpieceusingasharptool.Thisdesignwasimprovedby
AncientRomanswhoaddedaturningbowwhicheasedthewoodwork.Laterapedal(asinmanualsewingmachines)wasusedforrotatingthework
piece.Thistypeoflatheiscalledspringpolelathewhichwasusedtilltheearlydecadesofthe20thcentury.In1772,ahorsepoweredboringmachine
wasinstalledwhichwasusedformakingcanons.DuringtheIndustrialrevolution,steamenginesandwaterwheelswereattachedtothelathetoturnthe
workpieceathigherspeedwhichmadetheworkfasterandeasier.After1950,manynewdesignsweremadewhichimprovedtheprecisionofwork.
2.2.LathesareclassifieddependingupontheirapplicationandfunctionalityasLightdutylatheThesemachinesfindtheirapplicationinautomobile,
electronic,electricalindustriesandaremanufacturedfromqualitytestedrawmaterials.MediumdutylatheThesemachinesarepowerfulthanthelightduty
lathesandcanworkonbiggerworkpiecesandhavemorestrengththanthelightdutylathes.HeavydutylateThesemachinesaremanufacturedfrom
highestgradesofmaterialslikeironandsteel.Theyaredesignedforhighprecisionheavydutyoperations.AllgearedlatheInallgearedlathe,allthe

developed.Theadvancedlathemachineshavemanybenefitsovertheconventionallathes.Inconventionallathes,thelatheoperatorchecksthedimensions
regularlytogetperfectprecisionandthetimetakentocompletetheworkismoreforhighprecisionworks.Thisisveryimportantbecauseifheremoves
excessmetalfromtheworkpiece,thewholeworkpiecewillbeawastewhichwillresultinlossofmoneyandtime.InautomatedCNClathes,the
feedbacksystemcontinuouslymonitorsthedimensionsandsotheycompletetheoperationinashorttimewithhighaccuracy.Thelossisminimal
inautomatedlathestheyaremuchfasterandmoreefficientintermsofaccuracy.SummaryLatheisaveryimportantmachineinengineeringwhichisusedin
mostofthefields.TheyareusedforDiamondturning,ornamentalturning,metalspinning,glassworking,thermalsprayingandmanyotheroperations.Lathe
