New trade routes around Muslim held lands and
Italian Merchants

stronger against the wind
o Large cargo area
o Shallow draft allowed it to explore close to the
shore
o Sextant was an instrument used to determine
latitude and longitude
Adapt Muslim and Chinese technology
o Compass(Chinese) to navigate

Portuguese Fade from Power and the Dutch Rise

(Netherlands)

Portugal gained power of "Spice Islands" in Indian Ocean

through military
o Dutch and English Challenge Power
o Both create an East India Company
Act like governments (make money, sign
treaties, raise armies)
o The Dutch dominates Indonesia and southern tip of Africa
by 1700
Dutch East India Company was richer more
powerful than British East India Company
France and England gain in India
Key Idea:
o Europe still had little impact on Asian people
o The Age of Exploration would begin a competitive and
pursuit that would lead the Europeans to India, the Far
