Social Studies 10-1
Related Issue III Summative Assignment
Purpose:
In the grade ten social studies curriculum, students are expected to delve into
globalization and the impacts it has had on our world in both a historical and
contemporary context. It is important to be able to understand how our worlds citizens
interact with each other through economic means. In doing so, we become aware of how
inter-related aspects of our life are with those around the world. In this assignment, you
will demonstrate your understandings of globalization and its influence on the world we
live in.
Task:
For this assignment, you are asked to answer the following question in an argumentative
form. The question you will be answering is To what extent does globalization
contribute to sustainable prosperity for all people? This is the key issue for this unit in
social studies and it is essential that you are able to demonstrate your understandings of
how the topics we have discussed relate to this question. You are expected to take a
position in regards to this question and argue it using examples we have discussed in
class. Using a reasoning map, you will illustrate how you plan to make your arguments
and which examples you will use. As well, you must acknowledge the counter-argument
to the position you are making and make a rebuttal to that argument. The purpose behind
this assignment is for you to demonstrate an ability to critically examine aspects of
globalization and make an educated argument about a critical issue in our world.

Format:
Firstly, you will be expected to submit a reasoning map based on the position you will be
taking. This will help you navigate the arguments you plan to make in your assignment.
Everyone will be expected to follow the reasoning map template provided in class. In the
final product of your assignment you will be allowed to argue the position you are taking
in one of the following ways:
A speech (either written or video form)
A powerpoint or prezi presentation
If you choose a speech, you may choose between a speech in written format (12 point
font, double spaced) or create a video of yourself reciting the speech. Your speech should
be approximately four-five pages in length or two-five minutes if in video format. For
your powerpoint or prezi presentation you must include all of your arguments and create
a visually appealing representation of them. Your presentation should be approximately
two-five minutes long if someone was viewing it. Please choose the format best suited to
you as a student.
Evaluation:
For this assignment, you will be marked based on the rubric attached to this handout.
Please refer to this rubric as you are working on the assignment in order to ensure you do
not miss any important aspects of the assignment. You will be marked on the relevant
information provided in your assignment, the validity of the argument you make based on
the examples you provide, the success in how you communicate your position, and your
acknowledgement of the differing position to the one you are taking. As well, your
reasoning map will be assessed based on completion and the inclusion of all necessary
components as listed on the reasoning map template provided to you.
