December was the war mest since my r ecor ds began

here in 1987, some 5 C higher than average. It was
however drier than average, most of the rain passed to
the North of us over Wales and Cumbria. Scotland had
its wettest December since records began there. Much
of Southern and South-East England had a relatively
dry month. (Yes, I know the Met Office declared that it
was the wettest December ever, but they werent
reporting the entire picture accurately in the national
media)
The warmest day was the 16th with a maximum of 15.6
C, the coolest was the 24th with 9.2 C. The coldest
night was on the 9th with a minimum of 4.1 C, and
unusually there were no ground frosts all month, at least
at the higher end of the village.
Total rainfall was 83.1 mm, about 75% of the average
for the month. Most days saw some rain, the most came
on the 30th with a fall of 14.2 mm.
The windiest day was the 24th with a gust of 49 m.p.h.
Review of 2015:

A great big thank you to

everyone who in any way contributed to such a great
fun dinner and auction at The Malt Scoop on
November 26th 2015.
Wonderful generosity from all the auction lot donors
and some very competitive and generous bidding, a
fun quiz and an excellent draw raised a grand total of
2410.
Auctioneering of the highest order in
entertainment, from Pip Burrows, kept everyone alert
and on their toes.
Grateful thanks to Linda and Trevor at the Old Malt
Scoop for hosting a great meal and being so willing to
encourage this fund raising.
A great big thank you to the team at the ARK for
hosting a great coffee morning on Nov 17th from which
over 400 was also raised.
In total more than 2800, all of which will be doubled
by the UK Government and contribute to transforming
the lives of poor subsistence farmers in Ethiopia. Well
done and thank you everyone.
Aklilu Dogisso SAC Ethiopian Country Director and
Titus Sagala SAC Kenya Country Director will be at
the ARK on Feb 7th. See invite elsewhere in the
Lapford Lookout.

The average temperature through the whole year was

slightly above average, although 4 of the last 10 years
have been warmer than that. Total rainfall was 981.8
mm, just a little above average. Again, 4 of the last 10
years have been wetter, so overall a rather
unremarkable year in this part of the world.

February in the Garden and

the Allotment
If the weather is fine and the soil is in
the right condition February is the
month where the garden will come to
life and the jobs start to pile up.
Broad beans and Parsnips can be sown from
February onwards but soil condition is the defining factor.
If the seed bed is nice and fine and not waterlogged it is
OK to go ahead. If it is neither of the above then leave it
until all of the conditions are right. 6 to 8 weeks later will
not make all that much difference in the grand scheme of
things. If you can cover the soil with cloches, or a small
tunnel, under which if air can circulate, it will dry out.
In East Anglia there used to be a magic moment
when, all of a sudden, in March, the soil used to dry out
and the farmers and market gardeners used to be out in the
fields cultivating, drilling and planting. However with the
natural wetness down here in the South West I think that
magic time could be up to a month later. However the
growing season does seem to extend a little later at the end
of the year down here.
This month is when the most benefit can be had
from a greenhouse. Sow early vegetable and salad crops in
seed trays. If not in the greenhouse seedlings can be grown
on a light and airy windowsill. As you thin your salad
crops the thinnings can be used as baby leaves delicious.
If you have not already done so, you should buy
your seed potatoes and spread them thinly out in a shallow
tray or even an egg box to allow them to chit. They will be
ready to plant in March/April when those chits are 1
11/2 long.
Why dont you cover some of that Rhubarb that you
have at the bottom of the garden. If you dont have a forcer
use a large upturned pot. (Dont forget to put a Rhubarb
forcer on your Christmas wants list for next year)! If you
want faster growth you can cover the forcer with well
rotted horse manure to start with. The heat from the rotting
manure will encourage even better results.
You can plant Jerusalem artichokes about 1 deep
and 12 18 apart, but remember that you must dig up
every last one at harvest time, otherwise they will spread
like wild fire.
You can continue to harvest leeks, sprouting
broccoli and Brussels sprouts.
If you cover strawberry plants with garden fleece it
will encourage them to fruit earlier than normal. Autumn
raspberry plants can be planted, and this is the time to
prune them, cutting all of the growth down to 1 above the
ground. You must prune gooseberries, blueberries and red
and white currants before the end of the month.
If not already done, prune standard and bush apple
trees. Keep the centre of the tree or shrub fairly open to
allow air to circulate and cut out crossing and rubbing
branches.
It is difficult to protect large fruit trees from the
birds with netting but it is certainly worth protecting
gooseberries, birds love developing fruit buds and your
entire crop can disappear with great speed unless protected.
It is a good idea to add an organic fertiliser to fruit trees
and shrubs. Remove any mulch, feed around the roots,
water and renew the mulch. Use organic, for instance fish,
blood and bone, rather than artificial fertilisers. They
Lapford Lookout

provide a slower release of nutrients so as not to give a

sudden burst of growth too early in the season.

The Ornamental Garden

Now is the time when those delightful spring bulbs
begin to bloom. Snowdrops are probably the first. Youd
like more? You can buy them in pots in the Garden Centres
or you can buy them in the green. Both of those options are
better than planting bulbs in the early Autumn and planting
snowdrops in the green is the best and most inexpensive
way to increase your stock or to start a new swathe of early
colour. They are sometimes available in garden centres or
for those of you who are fairly computer literate there are
always a lot offered on line. They are usually sustainably
grown and are lifted February/March. They do not want to
be out of the ground too long, if you get them in clumps,
divide them before planting at their original depth. This is
easy to gauge as the part of the stem that is white will have
been underground and unable to photosynthesize and turn
green.
Another lovely spring flower is the wild primrose
which covers a lot of our Devon banks. When I was living
in Bedfordshire, my home county, I dont think I ever saw
any wild primroses! The primula is a cultivated form,
generally crossed with a cowslip. Their flowering time,
although normally the early spring, can be almost any time
of year, including whilst I am writing this article, (early
January), but the mild weather this winter is exceptional.
Primroses, primulas cowslips etc can be easily multiplied
by division after they have flowered. It is well worth giving
them a helping hand to increase their numbers. Gertrude
Jekyll used to sit under her trees in Munstead wood and as
her staff brought her clumps of primroses, they had lifted
elsewhere with a fork, she would divide them with a sharp
knife and plant them in large drifts which was her style.
You dont really need a sharp knife as it is obvious where
the clumps join together and they can easily be snapped
apart.
You can prune your Wisteria now, cutting back the
summer side shoots to 2 or 3 buds and towards the end of
the month is the time to prune summer flowering Clematis.
Dont be tempted to sow too many seeds in the
greenhouse this early in the season as they may become
leggy due to low light levels. Later sowings will catch up
and grow just as fast.
Now is the time to sit in that favourite armchair, sort
out your seeds by sowing date and plan what other seeds
and plants you want to add to your collection, not of course
forgetting that nice cup of tea or coffee!
Happy gardening!

Dear Editor
I would like to thank everyone involved in setting up
the Ark. It is an asset to the village and a credit to
their hard work.
I pop in there frequently, the atmosphere is so
friendly, the home made cakes and soup are
delicious and I almost always meet a friendly face to
chat with.
If you havent paid the Ark a visit yet, do try to
make time on Tuesday or Friday lunchtime. You
will then understand why I think so highly of
everyone concerned.

WELL KNOWN BELL RINGER RETIRES AFTER OVER 70 YEARS.

Pictured is 87 year old George Tucker of Lapford, who ceased bell ringing on his recent 87th
Birthday.
George, who was born in in Lapford, started ringing when he was just 14 years old, during the
second World War, at which time church bells were not allowed to ring, but George says he was
able to learn the art, although the bells were fixed so they could not ring, and he was then one of
the Parish Church ringers at Lapford, who rang the Victory Peel, at the end of the war.
Georges Grandfather, the late Tommy Tucker of Blackberry Gate, the local builder, was
also a ringer for many years, George worked for him and his late father, to learn all aspects of the
building trade. after leaving Lapford Village School, at the age of 14. George took over as Captain
of the ringers from Fred Spear, in the 70s and has continued ever since.
Besides this, he also cut the church grass and for a number of years was the grave digger. He wound up the Church
Clock, until it changed to being electric, and always put up the Flag as and when required for special days. George used
to help out by ringing at Chawleigh, and also organised the Ringers Tours, which ceased some years ago. George also
organised the annual ringing competition at the Lapford Revel, when as many as 8 teams competed for the Revel
Shield, which again sadly ceased some years ago. He also led Lapford Ringers to victory in the Down St. Mary and
other competitions. George was also instrumental in training many young ringers.
Nowadays there seems to be no ringing competitions in the area. Another ringer Stella Drew, gave praise to Mr
Tucker, and said that since he ceased, the bells have only rung once, as two ringers left the area, and she herself has
been ill, and they no longer have a Captain. However, ringer David Garton, is now training several people and they
rang at Christmas for the Crib Service on Christmas Eve.
George said he was sad to retire, but at his age, and after 73 years, found it just too much to get up the Tower. He
is a true Lapfordian, devoted to the Church, and a friend to all. He added that he hopes that Lapford Church Bells will
soon ring out again.

Lapford & District Horticultural Society News

Too wet for gardening much this winter, unless you have some cosy indoor greenhouse
space. Do not despair however, last month we gave you details regarding the
Horticultural Societys Spring Show to get you thinking & preparing for the gardening/
showing year. Here is the set cake recipe to practice with. I found it amongst my late

The Favourite Recipe of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
Pour one breakfast cup of boiling water over 8oz (225g) chopped dates & add one teaspoonful of bicarbonate
of soda. Let stand whilst the following is mixed:
8oz (225g) sugar
3oz (75g) butter
I beaten egg
Add these to the date mixture and bake in a moderate oven in a 9 X
10oz (275g) plain flour
12 (23 X 30cm) pan, or equivalent as this is a very old recipe I think.
1 teaspoonful vanilla
There is no timing given either.
I teaspoonful baking powder
teaspoonful salt
2oz (50g) chopped walnuts
Topping
5 tablespoonsful brown sugar
2 tablespoonsful butter
2 tablespoonsful cream
Mix these ingredients together and boil for three minutes. Spread on the cake and sprinkle with chopped
walnuts if liked.
Note: This is the Queen Mothers favourite cake recipe. At her request it must not be given away but must be
sold for one shilling and the money donated to a charitable organisation.

ROC Conversation
Follow-up Meeting
You may remember the ROC (Redeeming Our
Communities) conversation which took place at the
School on 5th November last year. Several issues for
the future were identified then, which if addressed
could improve the quality of life for local people,
particularly the young.
A Follow-up Meeting
has been arranged, open to all those who expressed
an interest or attended last time, plus anyone else
who would like to come along. The meeting will be
at the
Congregational Church Schoolroom
at 7-00pm on Thursday 18th February
Adrian Wyatt from ROC will be in attendance to
facilitate the discussions. We hope to see you there.

Devonshire
leek and potato soup
This substantial and warming soup makes good use of
Devonshire leeks, potatoes, milk and cream.
For four generous portions you will need, 50 g butter, 500g
potatoes, washed, but not peeled, and thickly sliced, 250g
leeks, washed, sliced in half lengthways, and then cut
across into small squares, 10 g medium oatmeal, litre
vegetable stock, and litre whole milk, seasoning, double
cream.
Method:
Melt the butter and add the sliced leeks stirring well. Allow
to cook gently without colouring for 2 minutes, then add
the sliced potatoes and the oatmeal. Add the stock and
milk and bring to the boil. Simmer gently, stirring
occasionally until the potatoes are soft. Season with salt
and freshly ground pepper, and finish with a little double
cream or a spoonful of clotted cream. Sprinkle with plenty
of chopped parsley and serve with crusty bread. Chopped
bacon can be added with the leeks, or flakes of skinned
smoked haddock which has been cooked in the milk before
it is added to the soup.
