Lesson Plan
1st Grade
S.O.L. 1. 1: Number and Number Sense
Focus: Place Value
The student will
a. Count from 0 to 100 and write the corresponding numerals; and
b. Group a collection of up to 100 objects into tens and ones and write the corresponding
numeral to develop an understanding of place value.
Objectives:
Students will be learning how to count from 0 to 100 and understand the
difference between different numerals. Students will be able to complete a
worksheet that requires them to look at pictures of different numerals, count
the correct amount and write the corresponding number.
Outline: Do this lesson on the 100th day of school
For this lesson you could have students bring in 100 items of their
choice. Example: 100 pennies or pieces of candy. Keep the items
small and easy to work with. But for my lesson, I will provide the
students with 100 jellybeans.
I. When students arrive, have them come into the classroom quietly and
sit in assigned seats once their belongings are put away.
II.
Once students are seated, explain to them what they are going to be
covering today during mathematics.
III. Start of the lesson by going over corresponding numerals.
IV.
Before explaining the differences between each corresponding numeral
and why numbers can increase or decrease by adding or subtracting,
the teacher should ask the students if they know the differences
between each corresponding numeral. The teacher should ask
questions what things could reach to be a 100. The teacher can use
real life examples of reaching 100, such as age and money. After the
discussion is complete and examples are used, the teacher will hand
out the appropriate worksheet.
V.
Before handing out the appropriate worksheet, make sure the students
understand how to count to 100. This is the first part of a lesson and it
is important to make sure they know what they are going. Although a
chart will be provided to help assist each student, make sure they
know how to do it on their own. Now, hand out the first worksheet.
VI. The first worksheet will be a chart of 0 to 100, where students and the
teacher will fill out together. The teacher will go over the numbers and
explain how and why they increase. Before the teacher moves onto the
next worksheet, the teacher will make sure the students understand
the material.

After the chart is the finished, have the students group the jellybeans
into tens and have them count their way up to 100.
Once the objects are grouped, the teacher will hand out a worksheet
with different questions on it that ask the students different numerical
groupings by counting out their materials and either adding or
subtracting the proper amount to get the correct answer.
When the students finish they can move comfortably around the room
and pick a partner to share their answers with.
Once students are completed with the worksheet and sharing their
answers, they will then go back to their assigned seats.
The teacher will then go over the information they had just answered.
The teacher will properly go over every answer on the worksheet and
ask numerous students their answers. For the students who got it
incorrect, the teacher will go over thoroughly how to get the correct
answer and break down each counting step.
The teacher can continue to go over different examples to make sure
each student understands the material that was just taught.
The teacher can then spray each students desk with shaving cream.
The teacher can write out individual questions on the board and have
the students right their answers on the desk. (A fun way to get
students involved). The teacher will walk around the room checking the
students answers and can hand out class participation or use positive
reinforcement to keep the students working hard.
After this activity, the students will clean their desks. The teacher will
then hand out the assigned homework for students to complete that
night. If there is extra time (which there shouldnt) students can start
to work on it.

Please complete this worksheet on your own. Afterwards you will share your
answers with another classmate! Happy 100th day of school
* Draw and color in how many you had for each.
1. How many red jellybeans did you have?

2. How many blue jellybeans did you have?

3. How many green jellybeans did you have?

4. How many yellow jellybeans did you have?

5. What if you add the red and blue jellybeans, how many do you have in
total?

6. What if you add the green and yellow jellybeans together how many
do you have in total?

7. *DONT draw OR color, just write your answer. How many jellybeans do
you have in total?
