Assignment 4: Course Storyboard

Designing your approach to learning and teaching
(25% of final grade)

See Course Schedule for Due Date

ASSIGNMENT
Goal

Develop a visual representation of the conceptual design for your online distance learning course.

Skills development
Development of skills in the design of learning and teaching experiences;
Cultivation of skills in operationalizing knowledge of learning theories into models of teaching and
learning.
A storyboard is a tool used by designers to plan a sequence of events, the contexts in which the events will
occur, and the actors who will be involved in the events. The most common use of a storyboard is for
directors who are planning how they will tell the story in a movie they will direct; however, other persons are
finding the storyboard tool useful in helping to plan (visualize) other kinds of story lines.
Create a PowerPoint file that illustrates how your learners will move from entry level knowledge through
demonstration of your courses learning objectives. The storyboard will cover Gagn's nine events of
instruction for each module:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

Gaining attention
Informing the learner of the objective
Stimulating recall of prerequisite learned capabilities
Presenting the stimulus material
Providing learning guidance
Eliciting performance
Providing feedback about performance correctness
Assessing the performance
Enhancing retention and transfer

Important note:
You will be using PowerPoint to create your storyboard, but your goal is NOT to create a presentation for your
course. The storyboard you create will be a tool that you and your design team can use as a transition from
the expression of your course learning design in narrative form (Assignment 2 Learning Design) to a visual
expression of your course as it would be implemented in a Learning Management System.
HELP FOR THIS ACTIVITY
Creating a storyboard is likely to be a new activity for you. There will be a good example for you to view. In
addition, there will be a Storyboard Workshop where you can post drafts and get early help and feedback as
you work on this project.
Format and length
There is no specific limitation on length for your storyboard, but plan on being concise.

Using Gagn's 9 events of instruction, create a storyboard to illustrate how your learners will begin
your course, access course materials, interact with classmates and instructor, and complete
assessment activities.

Submit your assignment as a PowerPoint file.

Name your file using the following format:
LastnameFirstinitial_A4
Example: SmithL_A4

Where to submit
Submit your assignment in the Assignments area.
