To Whom it May Concern,
Resilient. Self-assured. Decisive. Possessing both critical listening skills and fine-tuned logic, Delilah Rivera, a senior at Stony Point High School,
has the power and know-how to lead herself and others to meet goals and achieve personal success. It has been a pleasure to watch Delilah become
an accomplished writer, a skilled communicator and committed agent of change, through her assignments as a staff writer, designer, photographer and
editor for the nationally recognized student newspaper, the Prowler. Over the last three years, Delilah has seen continual growth in both her natural and
acquired abilities, and because of this growth, I give her my highest recommendation.
In the most unconventional way, three years ago, on the first of school, I learned that Delilah possesses strong, precise planning skills. On that day
I watched in confusion and in awe as Delilah, a sophomore at the time, strategically slithered her way through my classroom. From the start, her mission
was clear: avoid interpersonal communication at all cost and just remain unnoticed. In just a matter of seconds I found myself chuckling and making
internal bets that shed never be able to take her 50ish self through the clump of returning, upperclassmen newspaper students without being seen. In
seconds, she proved me wrong. Using her phone to look distracted, Delilah tugged at her black tights, adjusted her black skater skirt and then glanced
down at her black leather boots. She made her way through the maze of students and found her set ending point, a chair, sitting in solitude, in the back
of the room.
Oh my, Im going to have my hands full with this one, I thought. I was right and, yet, so very wrong on countless levels.
My highly fashionable, yet obviously not mainstream, newbie did do the obvious and predictable when assignments started coming. Im really
quiet. I dont really like people, shed say. But, thinking back on the first day of school, I quickly became aware that Im quiet really meant I listen and
I observe, and I dont really like people meant from all the data I collect about people, I can make on-point decisions about their character and
motives.
From that point on, I knew Delilah would become one of my best student journalists. Now, a state and nationally award winning student journalist, in
her last semester of high school newspaper, Delilah has far exceeded that prediction.
Delilahs inter-personal communication abilities have led her to become a powerful feature writer. Listening in intense interviews and telling peoples
stories using descriptions and observations, Delilah surpasses most reporters. With a sense of character and justice, Delilahs become an editorial writer
who can and who has led to change in our campus rules and procedures, and with her ability to take in all the facts before making any judgment calls,
shes made her an excellent news writer.
Three years later, Delilah still slinks into a room and tries to seemingly go unnoticed. Without anyone realizing, she, more now than ever, uses her
understated listening, processing and speaking skills to conduct business to proceed with her personal and social life. As she guides all her discussions
with calm, caring words, and as she lets others lead discussions, Delilah learns more from her interactions than any student Ive met. Pairing her ability
to be personable while intensely listening and collecting data, with her other diverse sets of skills, I know theres no limit to what Delilah will be able
achieve in the future.
