Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.
For example

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England

Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/ can
be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and sound
engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets or
studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

Importance
It is very important to know all the costs of your production before
you begin filming for your production. As the producer is going to
have to pay for it everything. Therefore, you need to work on a strict
schedule as you do not want to have to pay more money than you
need to. In addition to this, the producer will need to know what he
needs to buy such as costumes, actors etc. Otherwise, it could all be
rushed which would decrease the quality of the production,
therefore planning is very important in order to ensure that the
production is to a good quality. Equipment can be purchased and
loaned online, it is normally relatively expensive; good quality
equipment is key in order to create a high quality production.
Transport can be organised with your producer, you would need to
talk to your cast and crew in order to understand what they need in
order to get there or move between locations. Transport such as
coaches can be hired in order to take people between filming
locations. You're able to hire actors online, you need to ensure that
the actors fit the roles which you're recruiting for, for example: a
muscly guy as a bouncer. This way the production becomes more
immersive for the viewers. For props and materials you can
purchase them online or you can go shopping yourself.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size of
team; roles)

Importance
It is important to know the deadlines, availability of equipment and
personnel because the producer has to pay for all of the costs in the
production. Therefore, the deadline is important because the longer
that the filming takes place, the more money that the producer is
going to have to pay. Therefore, the producer will have to pay more
if it takes a longer amount of time to film the production.
In addition to this, availability of equipment is also very important
as in order to meet the deadlines, the equipment that you need has
to be available at the times when you need it. Otherwise, you are
likely to run over the deadline.
Also, the people who you need have to be available at the times
when you need them because once again, It is likely that you will go
over the deadline.

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
Production equipment such as cameras, green screen, tripod,
lighting and sound need to be bought by the producer of a
production so you are able to film the production. Without these,
you will not be able to film the production, you will need to know
what you need before you film it. Otherwise, if you dont you will not
be able to produce a good quality film as you did.
Also, if you need to film over a longer period of time, you will need a
place to store your equipment. Therefore, this will need to be
purchased so that your equipment will not become damaged. Postproduction houses are important as they allow you to produce high
quality edits on your productions, post-production houses are
buildings which provide facilities to allow producers to edit their
projects with high quality equipment.

Sourcing
https://www.prokit.com/ allows you to purchase and rent production
equipment.
http://www.envypost.co.uk/ allows you to rent their production

houses, envy post has the largest production house in the UK.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
Original material is the main basis for your film which the archive
material would then compliment, you need your own footage when
creating the movie so that you are producing something new and
innovative rather than something that has already been done.
Archive material would be used because this compliments the film
that you're creating, it is normally used as a tool in order to show
something that has already happened. An example of archive
material would be flashbacks where the narrator will comment over
the archive material. Photo library materials can be useful when
creating documentaries as it allows you to produce an image of the
past in order to show youre audience what you're talking about,

you can see this in effect in the documentary series 'Making a

Murderer'. Sound library materials are needed in all kinds of
productions, bad sound effects can break a movie which is why it is
important to ensure that you have good quality effects, an example
would be if I wanted to get a teleport effect in my production I would
download a teleport sound effect to use. The internet is an
important tool for using this as this is how you access the photo and
sound library materials. Audio from your original material is
important, however to get good quality audio you need to ensure
that the microphone that you're using is good quality, you're able to
rent equipment online so you can do that if you haven't got personal
access to the equipment. Scripts are important so that youre actors
and narrators know what lines that they will be producing once the
cameras begin rolling. An example of a script would be pulp fiction.
http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/pulp_fiction.html. When filming
interviews it is important that the audio is good quality, the shot is
of their face in order that you can see the emotions of the person
when they are talking and it is important that the mood and setting
is right. In the film: Human (you can find it on YouTube) They
conduct interviews with multiple people in the perfect setting.
Costumes are important when filming productions, on angels.uk
have a wide range of costumes available for purchasing.
Sourcing
Original material is filmed by the director but archive footage for
productions can be found at.

Locations:

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
It is important to know where you are filming the production as you
will need to know how hard it is for your cast and crew to get there.
In addition to this you will need to know the costs of getting there as
you need to know If you will be able to afford the location. Also, you
need to know how far away the location is. You may need
permission to enter the site also. The weather will also affect your
scene as you may have planned for it to be sunny, however it may
have been forecasted to be rainy. This has happened when filming
numerous productions such as Blue Mountain State where they had
to postpone filming due to rain.
Here is an example of a location recce.

best way to get there.

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
It is important to know if you need permission to go onto a location
otherwise you may be fined. You also need to know if certain things
such as music are copyrighted otherwise you will be fined if that
music is then used, royalty free music can be downloaded from
YouTube, If music or a sound effect is royalty free it means that
there is no penalty for using that sound effect, It also means that
you can use the sounds without having to contact the creator, in my
advert I used a royalty free song called Carefree by Kevin Macleod.
Health and safety is also required otherwise your cast/crew could
damage themselves, you can find and download health and safety
sheets from online. Insurance is needed in-case you break a piece of
equipment which would be extremely expensive to repurchase.

The below only requires you to discuss the importance

(Choose the one that relate to your production only)
Regulatory
Ofcom
bodies:
Press Complaints Commission
(PCC) Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA)
Pan European Game
Information (PEGI)
Entertainment Software Rating
Board (ESRB)
British Board of Film
Classification (BBFC)
Importance
You need to know the ratings so that your target audience will be
able to view your film, for example, if you were to have a film which
is targeted at young children and it contains blood and gore, they
will not be able to view it due to the ESRB/BBFC rating. Therefore,
you can only include things which would keep the age rating low.
This is why pre-production is necessary - so you can target your
production at the right people and ensure that they're able to view
it.

Trade unions:

Producers Alliance for Cinema

and Television (PACT),
National Union of Journalists
(NUJ)
Broadcasting Entertainment
Cinematograph and Theatre
Union (BECTU)

Importance
It is important to know about trade unions before you begin filming
in a production because you need to know that your cast and crew
are happy with the environment, payments etc. In order to avoid the
involvement of trade unions which could then take legal action
against you if the accusations are extreme enough. Trade unions
also strike from time to time, an example of a trade union striking
would be the 'National Union of Journalists' just today 04/02/2016,
they held a strike due to the kidnapping of journalists in Yemen.

Trade
associations:

Entertainment and Leisure

Software Publishers
Association (ELSPA)
British Interactive Media
Association (BIMA)

Importance

It is important to get your production published by a company as

they will then be able to get your film viewed by people which will
then ultimately lead to the income from your production. Therefore,
you need to know the people who will be publishing your
production. BIMA is the British Interactive Media Association, they

are responsible for promoting the British digital industry, sharing

knowledge and best practice and rewarding great work in the media
sector.
