Definitions and Meanings:

Joint: where bones meet
The function of muscles and
joints: To allow movement
Common joint injuries:
Dislocations- in which the ends
of your bones are forced from
their normal positions
Fractures- can range from a
thin crack to a complete break
Shin Splints-pain along the shinbone (tibia)
Arthritis- is inflammation of a joint

Muscles
Muscle is a tissue composed of cells or fibres, the contraction of which produces
movement in the body
In the human body there are three types of muscles:
Smooth muscle: surrounds internal organs such as the
intestine.
Cardiac Muscles- are found in the heart, constantly
working to pumping blood around the body
Skeletal Muscles- there are 640 skeletal muscles in the
body. The usually exist in airs called antagonistic
muscle pairs. For example the triceps and biceps
Arthritis is inflammation of a joint of the skeletal system, there are two types of
arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid.
Muscles are protein structures that can contract and extend and allow bones to
move.
Tendons: Join muscles to bone
Ligaments: Join bone to bone
Antagonistic Pair: two muscles which carry out the opposite effects.
Cartilage: Protects the ends of bones

Common injuries include:

Muscle Sprain-is
a stretching or tearing of
Muscle Strain- is a stretching or
ligaments

tearing

of muscle or tendon.

Symptoms:

sudden onset of pain

soreness
limited range of movement
bruising or discoloration
swelling
a "knotted-up" feeling
muscle spasms
stiffness
weakness

Cause:
An acute muscle strain is when your muscle
tears suddenly and unexpectedly. Such tears
can occur either from injuries or trauma. This
can be due to:

not warming up properly before

physical activity
poor flexibility
poor conditioning
overexertion and fatigue

This can happen when moving walking,

running jumping etc.
Treatment:
Rest

Case study: An ankle sprain

Symptoms:

swelling
tenderness
bruising
pain
inability to put weight
on the affected ankle
skin discoloration
stiffness

Cause: The foot suddenly

twists or rolls, forcing the
ankle joint out of its normal
position.
Treatments:

Getting plenty of rest and not

putting weight on your ankle.

Elevating your foot with pillows

while resting or sleeping. This
will help reduce swelling.

To apply ice to the injured

area as soon as you can to
reduce swelling.

Avoid using your muscle for a few days, especially if movement causes an
increase in pain. Too much rest can cause muscles to become weak, which can
prolong the healing process. After two days, slowly begin using the affected
muscle group, taking care not to overdo it.
Ice
Apply ice immediately after injuring your muscle. This will minimize swelling.
Dont put ice directly on your skin. Use an ice pack or wrap ice in a towel. Keep
the ice on your muscle for about 20 minutes. Repeat every hour on the first day.
For the next several days, apply ice every four hours.
Compression
To reduce swelling, wrap the affected area with an elastic bandage until swelling
comes down. Be careful not to wrap the area too tightly, as this can reduce your
blood circulation.
Elevation
Whenever possible, keep the injured muscle raised above the level of your heart.

Dislocations- when the ends of your bones are

forced from their normal positions

A dislocation occurs when a bone slips out of

a joint.
For example, the top of your arm bone fits
into a joint at your shoulder. When it slips or
pops out of that joint, you have a dislocated
shoulder.
You can dislocate almost any joint in your
body, including your knee, hip, ankle, or
shoulder.
Cause: when a joint experiences an
unexpected or unbalanced impact EG: its
knocked out of place due to a hit.
After a joint dislocates, its more likely to
dislocate again in the future.
Symptoms:

loss of motion
bruised
swollen
visually a strange/ deformed shape
discolored(red)
pain during movement
numbness around the area
tingling feeling

Treatments: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation,

naturally manipulation, surgery, medication or/ and
immobilization.
