AHS fundamentals and have a significant impact on students' activity choices.

Supai Middle School in the Scottsdale Unified School District has both strengths and
weakness with the active and healthy school environment. This school has many strengths that
stick out from me just by observing the school. The first strength that is noted lands in the hands
of the teachers and their unstoppable school pride. Supais teaching staff shows school spirit
daily in the classroom and at the sports events. By having such strong support from the teachers,
it pushes the students to support and participate in the schools many sports teams. A lot of the
students favorite teachers are those that are coaching their teams and asking them questions
daily about practice and other varies sport related topics. Another strength is from the staff as
well while recess and lunch is going on. On many occasions while most teachers are eating or
prepping lessons, multiple male teachers were out on the field organizing soccer games with the
students and playing. I know firsthand as a student once nothing was better than playing a sport
with your teacher, but also the idea of beating your teaching in something for once. This idea of
teachers and staff motivating students had almost the whole eighth grade on field playing and
running around together. Not only did this build community, but an active one. Weaknesses of
the school are also prevalent with the consumption of spicy Cheetos and Polar Pops on campus.
A Polar Pop is one doesnt know, is a 75 cent drink that is size XXL from the gas station, in

which you can fill with any type of soda or sugar beverage. When walking on campus I spotted
about 8 students just in one passing period with these drink. By banning them and allowing only
water or healthy choices, students will already be cutting down on the amount of sugar they are
loading into their bodies before 8 am. Another major weakness at the school is how sports team
are set up. So many students wanted to be on the soccer team, making so many students not
make the team. The school should set up multiple playing teams to allow those students who
really want to participate the chance to move around and be active despite their ability level. This
weakness and possible change would boost the after school category on the assessment from the
low 40% to hopefully 100% (Gopher).
One way to improve the schools policies would be to enforce a strict no junk food band
on student lunches. Daily when teachers allow students to have that snack during 3rd period when
they have maybe a later lunch, I observe Oreos and Cheetos being consumed at fast rates leaving
teachers wondering why the students are no longer focused or hyper. If the school only allowed
healthy options for snack such as apples or crackers, it would not only benefit the students
behavior and academics at school, but at home as well. If parents were sent a letter to inform
them of these changes, purchases at the grocery store would change. Another policy to improve
is the food allowed into school by parents when visiting their students. Every day, parents are
dropping lunch off to students in the cafeteria and saying hi, while delivering fast food such as
Burger King or Taco Bell. These food options put the students to sleep after lunch is over, giving
them no energy for the remainder of the day. If this new rule was put into effect, parents would
have to bring healthy lunch options benefiting their childs academics, behavior, and overall
health. The food we consume has such a strong effect on our bodies and actions.

When engaging parents in students school life, it builds a support system for both the
teacher and the child. This support system can be built in many ways. One way information
about health choices and activities for students can be delivered is that of an afterschool
workshop. Parents could attend a lecture once a month put on by the science teachers where they
can learn how food affects the body and healthy changes they can make at home. This could be
offered monthly to accommodate for parents work schedules and lives. Another important idea is
to start with the educators themselves. If the teachers are living healthy life styles they can better
teach their students in forms of modelling. If the school offered after school or before school
workout programs for teachers which can be put on by the P.E. teacher, or even a class on
healthy eating and meal preparation, teachers will be given the chance in their busy days to help
themselves as well.
In correlation with my signature assignment on the relationship between stress and
physical activity, these changes in school policy and numbers on the school assessment could
serve as data. By observing what is going on in schools now and then further researching
physical activity and its effects on the body, it will further open my thoughts and opinions on
beneficial school wide programs for students with healthy life styles.
Supai Middle School is a title 1 school, part of Scottsdale Unified School District in the
state of Arizona. This school is a public middle school, serving students grade level 6th through
8th in a suburban community. The school is currently ranked at 439th for middle schools in the
state and houses 726 enrolled students (Schooldigger). When looking at school rankings from
2015, the school was ranked last for worst in the district. Supais ethnic makeup is primarily
Hispanic, with 426 Hispanic, 173 White, 50 American Indian, 46 African American, 17 Asian, 9
two or more races, and 5 Pacific Islander students (Schooldigger). In 1988, the schools majority

of ethnic makeup was White, and slowly as the years went on the number of Hispanic students
went up at the highest it has been this year. The school has 26.9 full time teachers employed with
a 19.6 student to 1 teacher ratio. The schools percentage of students receiving free and reduced
lunch is at an all-time high for the school at 76.2 percent. When looking at the schools
neighborhood, the crime rate is high in that of assault and property damages. The school is a D
ranked school but does have a 94% attendance rate (AZreportcards). There was no current
information on the schools ELL percentages, but in years 2008 and 2009 the school met AYP
requirements, testing 95% of students, good attendance rating, and meeting the AMOs for grade
levels (StudentAchievement).
