Unit Title: Exponents and Polynomials

Time Frame: 17 days, 11 class periods

Course: Algebra I

Grade Level: 9th Grade

CURRICULUM/STANDARDS

HS.N-RN.1
HS.A-SSE.1a
HS.A-APR.1

KEY THEMES/QUESTIONS
List the key themes/questions that are guiding this unit:
What patterns arise when adding, subtracting, multiplying and/or dividing polynomial functions using the properties of exponents?
Are we learning how to evaluate and simplify expressions containing exponents?
Are we learning how to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials by using properties of exponents and combining like terms?
What real life modeling can be seen from adding, subtracting, multiplying and/or dividing polynomial functions?
What other techniques are there for solving systems of polynomials?

ASSESSMENT
List the assessments that will be used to gauge student learning. This may include traditional quizzes or exams, as well as major learning activities
such as simulations, labs, etc.
Jan 8 Quiz on Sections 1-2 Assesses student understanding of material for first two sections.
Jan 13/14 - Lab: Model Polynomial Multiplication Assesses students conceptual knowledge of polynomial multiplication in real life scenarios.
Jan 15 Quiz on Sections 3-4 - Assesses student understanding of material for sections 3-4.
Jan 25/26 Unit 6 Test Assesses students knowledge of entire units material.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS
List all resources (copyrighted or otherwise) that you will need to teach this unit. This should be a comprehensive list of all resources you will need
to create or borrow (including textbook chapters, additional readings, videos, power points and teaching notes, handouts, assessments, etc.)

ACCOMODATIONS
Students with Learning Disables
Learning disabilities ranges from a mild case of memory lose to severe auditory processing disorder. Since there is such a wide range of
learning disabilities, I will need to work closely with the student, the students parents and case manager to understand exactly how I can
accommodate that individual student.
Students with gifted minds
There will be many parts to each of the stations that will require a higher level of cognitive thinking and reasoning. For the students that are
high achievers, I will be prepping them as a group prior to this lesson to be the group facilitators. They will be encouraged to ask more
questions then give answers. I will ask these students to model strategic use of necessary skills to solve the word problem and to help other
groups with a leadership mindset. These students will also be strongly encouraged to complete the extra credit extension once the group
they are helping is able to function without their aid.
Students in Special Education
There are a few students that have ADHD. For these hyperactive students, I will set up the problem such that more scaffolding is given to
these students in the form of optional hints. These will be hidden for the students to take advantage of, if they choose to use them. The idea is
to have the students be given the same opportunity to succeed and progressively become more confident in their problem solving abilities to
opt out of the hints in subsequent classes. This hint will be available after 10 minutes of the group working together on that problem.
Students in ELL Programs
I do not currently have any ELL students however if I were to have ELL students I would provide the word problem instructions with a
simpler problem that is demonstrated so the students can observe how a problem could be solved thats simpler and be able to apply that
knowledge to a more complicated problem. For example. Instead of representing a rectangle with sides 4x-2 and 2x, I could present a
rectangle with sides 4 in. and 6 in. and show how to find the area of that simple rectangle.
