Course Overview:
Social Studies 10 is a required course that builds on the knowledge and
skills of Socials Studies 9. The focus of the course is on our country evolving
from a collection of cultures, colonies, and internal conflicts, to become a
nation. We will examine Canadian history and geography, including BC
history and the Pacific Rim. Course objectives include the following:
Knowledge of the major events of 19th century history with particular
attention of the birth of Canada Confederation
Increased knowledge of the major issues and problems relating to the
exploration and settlement of Western Canada
Understanding of the reasons surrounding British Columbias decisions
to join Canada
Appreciation of the economic strengths of Canada as well as British
Columbia and their changing role in world trade
Further develop communications and listening skills as well as problem
solving and decision-making skills
Discuss current events issues as they affect Canada

Evaluation:
Students are evaluated on an on-going basis. All submitted work that is
graded is cumulative and will be counted towards final marks. Each student
has the ability to be successful in this course; in most cases, success is
simply a choice and involves a sincere effort.

1. BE ON TIME: Classes begin promptly. If you are late, please enter class
quietly and ask another student what you have missed (at the appropriate
time). If the door is shut, please knock.

2. BE PREPARED: Each class you need to come with a textbook, binder,


pens, pencils and student agenda. Ill let you know in advance if other
materials are required.
3. HOMEWORK: Homework checks are frequent. At this grade, if you dont
do it, you will get a zero.
4. EXTRA HELP: Im always willing to help you out. Make an appointment;
check before or after school or at an appropriate time in the class.
5. PARTICIPATION: This is expected and required for a successful class.
You need to participate to learn!
6. MISSED CLASS: If we are active on the class website at the time, check
the page for assignments you may have missed. If this is not an option, find
an appropriate and/or convenient moment for the teacher, and ask for your
missing assignment. You must call the school for ALL absences and provide
a note from a parent or guardian if possible.
7. TESTS: Advance notice will be given for all major tests. There may be
some surprise quizzes given once and a while. If you miss a test, you will be
expected to write it ASAP at a time we discuss.
8. WASHROOM: Please try to visit the washroom during classroom breaks
(between classes, lunch, etc.), you may ask to go at an appropriate time
during class, but dont abuse the privilege.
9. EXPECTATIONS: There must be a mutual respect between us in this
classroom. How our time together goes is really up to you.
10. ATTENDANCE: Due to the dense course content, regular attendance is
mandatory. As a general rule it would be wise to contact me if you are going
to be absent.
11. USE OF TECHNOLOGY: At NO TIME will it be appropriate to have your
phone out while I am speaking. We will touch on when there is an
appropriate time. At no time will it be appropriate to have headphones in
during class unless specifically directed.
13. FOOD and DRINK: You may have food and drink in the classroom to an
extent. I will not accept energy drinks in the classroom and you may have a
snack ONLY if I see that you can clean up after yourself after.
