GHEEBAT OR BACKBITING IS COMPLETELY PROHIBITED

IN ISLAM

Our religion Islam is a religion of love, peace and compassion. Suspicion, Lies, back
biting, slander and gossiping are totally prohibit in Islam and these activities are
totally against to Islam. In fact these considered amongst the most destructive of all
major sins. This is so because these sins sow discord among the Muslim Ummah and
lead toward the destruction. These activities cause hostilities between the peoples of
the same household, relatives, and friends and between neighbours.
Islam teaches us that our relationship with mankind should be sincere, loyal and
responsible, we should respect for the honour, privacy and reputation of others.
Telling something of a Muslim or a non-Muslim to others in their absence in order to
create their image bad or make them look low or to put them down is backbiting or
gheebat. Backbiting (Gheebat) is completely forbidden or Haram in Islam. When a
person is being talked about with respect to his family-tree, body, his ethics, his
business-affairs, his religion, his speech, his worldly-affairs, his clothing, his house,
etc this act could hurt that person and he can be upset after hearing that talk, this kind
of talk is regarded as backbiting. Doing this through hints or by body-language or
writing ways would also be forbidden just like it was done by talk.
It is necessary to advice a person who is unaware about this or doesnt know anything
about it. There are so many reasons which lead a person for committing backbiting.
Backbiting often results from the weakness in backbiters own soul, such as complex
of inferiority. A person should pry into his own soul to discover what kind of
weakness prompted you to backbite your sister or brother. Engaging in act of gheebat
is also an extremely costly affair, Hence the Salah, fasting, Zakat, Hajj, etc. of a
person would all be lost because of doing gheebat, it will be a tremendous loss.
We all know as Muslims we shouldn't backbite yet sometimes we forget and other
times we don't know we are actually backbiting.

In the Quran, Al-Hujaraat: 12, ALLAH says:

O you who believe! Avoid most of suspicion, for surely suspicion in some cases is
a sin, and do not spy nor let some of you backbite others. Does one of you like to
eat the flesh of his dead brother? But you abhor it; and be careful of (your duty
to) Allah, surely Allah is Oft-returning (to mercy), Merciful.
We can also learn from another hadees that people who backbite have hypocrisy in
their hearts. We must not follow the people who are indulge in the act of backbite and
we should not be one of those people, because ALLAH hate these kind of people.
Backbiting ruins a persons honour and personality and makes them look bad.
Therefore it is necessary for all Muslims not to hear the Gheebat or not involved in
this activity and should restrain the back biter so that the honour of the momin
preserved.
