Scope of Proposed Topic:

The reason why I choose this topic would be because of how mass incarceration has become
such a huge problem across America. While researching my question I found that most high
school students that become delinquents eventually end up in the group of mass incarcerated
individuals. If the high school students were to become educated over the consequences that
follow if they were to become a delinquent, then possibly the percentage of individuals in mass
incarceration could decrease.
General areas of study that area closely related to your topic (check all that apply):
Language arts
Science
Computer science
X Social studies
Art
Business/accounting
Mathematics
Music
X Personal/social development
Other

Reasons for selecting this topic:

1. The younger generation needs to be informed about the problems associated with juvenile
delinquency.
2. If the younger generation becomes informed then the percentage of individuals that end up in
the mass incarceration population will not be as large in the future.
3. The younger generation is not informed about how much juvenile delinquency can affect their
future; so researching the topic and presenting it to a group of younger generation individuals
can help them stay away from committing crimes.

Evidence from Randomly Assigned Judges." The Quarterly Journal of Economics 130.2 (2015):

Over 130,000 juveniles are detained in the United States each year with 70,000 in detention on
any given day, yet little is known about whether such a penalty deters future crime or interrupts
social and human capital formation in a way that increases the likelihood of later criminal
behavior. This article uses the incarceration tendency of randomly assigned judges as an
instrumental variable to estimate causal effects of juvenile incarceration on high school
completion and adult recidivism.
