Dear Friends in Christ,

In 1913, the Georgia Legislature, hoping to stop the
Blessed Sacrament Sisters from teaching at St. Peter Claver
Catholic School, tried to pass a law that would have prohibited
white teachers from teaching black students. While some in
Georgia may have opposed St. Peter Claver School the African
American community embraced it and supported the sisters and
the school with their money, labor and children. Thankfully the law did not
pass. After a difficult start and in spite of many challenges, St. Katherine Drexel
and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (SBS) educated children of color for more
than 100 years. While it has been more than ten years since the Sisters of the
Blessed Sacrament withdrew from the school and the Daughters of Charity joined
us, their efforts have made generational impacts on our parish and Macon-Bibb
County. While once in opposition, local political and civic leader praise our
school. Well they should. Our graduates out perform their peers in high school.
Many of you are graduates of our school as well as your parents, grandparents,
children and grandchildren. The SBS Alumni Association is active in supporting our
school and the retired SBS sisters. The schools presence has been and will
continue to be a parish and countywide blessing!
This week begins National Catholic Schools Week (www.ncea.org). Please
stop by the school after Mass for Open House (Sunday from Noon to 3pm).
Consider signing up to attend Grandparents/Senior Day at the school on
Wednesday, February 3rd. Also, members of the parish council will share the
parish survey results at each of the Masses this weekend. The results were
overwhelming positive with helpful comments for improvements. Results are
available online as well.

The talks will continue Tuesday, February 2nd, at 5:45 pm in the Social Hall.
Potluck dinner followed by Fr. Franks course. Please bring a covered dish.
Pedro Arrupe, a former leader of the Jesuits, said: If there is hunger
anywhere in the world, then our celebration of the Eucharist is somehow
incomplete . In the Eucharist we receive Christ hungering in the world. He comes
to us, not alone, but with the poor, the oppressed, the starving of the earth.
Through him they are looking to us for help, for justice, for love
expressed in action. Therefore we cannot properly receive the Bread of life
unless at the same time we give the bread of life to those in need wherever and
whoever they may be. The compelling need to complete the Eucharist with some
form of ministry to others has always been a tradition in the Church.
Come join us February 7th, for the sixth of our eight course series on the
Eucharist. Feel free to come to 1 course or as many as possible. Come and learn,
question and deepen our understanding of who we are as a Eucharistic community.

Pope Francis has stated: Jesus gives

himself to us in the Eucharist, shares our
journey and, in fact, makes himself the
food that sustains our lives, even when
the road gets rough and obstacles slow
our stepsthe Lord leads us to follow
his path that of service, sharing and
giving; and that little that we have, the
little that we are, if shared, becomes a
treasure because the power of God, who is love, descends to
our poverty and transforms it reminding us each time that
following him means going out of ourselves and making our
lives not something we possess, but a gift to him and to
others. This week in our reflection on the Eucharist we will
walk through the Eucharistic Liturgy and realize the
transformation it calls each of us, within community, to
become: solidarity of God, a solidarity that can never be
exhausted and should never stop causing awe.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Rave reviews greeted Jesus first hometown homily proclaiming a
year of Gods mercy, but the mood turned violent when he went on
to declare that Gods mercy embraces outsiders; it rejects
distinctions between citizen and foreigner, acceptable and
unworthy, even sinner and saint. Far from being anyones personal
possession, Gods kingdom is open to everyone, Gods love
unconditional, Gods mercy boundless. By this Jubilee Year of
Mercy, Pope Francis repeats Jesus Gospel to broaden our horizons
until our vision matches Jesus vision of every sinner as a potential
saint, and each suffering stranger as our neighbor. Jesus, says Pope
Francis, continually went beyond the law, keeping company with
public sinners and even sharing meals with them to demonstrate
that Gods mercy is the beating heart of
the
Gospel (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). To be truly Jesus disciples,
such unconditional love and boundless mercy must also be at the
center of all we say and do.

MINISTERIO HISPANO
Cuarto Domingo

abuelos, hijos y nietos.

y extranjero, dignos e indignos, incluso pecador y santo.

Testamento (Lev 12:1-8).
La fiesta es conocida y celebrada con
diversos nombres: la Presentacin del
Seor, la Purificacin de Mara, la fiesta de la Luz y la fiesta de las Candelas;

Family Advancement
Ministries needs your
help!
As the weather gets cooler, the
families we serve need warm clothes for
their young children. We would appreciate donations of boys
clothes, sizes 12 months to size 10; and girls clothes, size 2
through size 8. We are especially in need of pants for boys (and
girls too).
If you do not have gently used clothes to donate and
would like to help otherwise, we suggest diapers sizes 4 and 5
and pull ups. Thank you for helping those in our community who
need our assistance.
