Dunking the Planets (Activity 1,3,5)
o Build scale model of solar system outdoors
Core Idea: Solar System
Kids have to create a 3D model & something digitally
Sizes & distances are goal! Have kids come up with scale
Scale model of sizes
Volume? Surface Area (orange activity or a
variation)?
Possible Scale 1000mi - 2000 mi= 1 in;
Nothings bigger than ______
Scale distances (need to use different scales?)
Scaled size example:
http://greatballsoffireexhibit.org/docs/Planet_models.pdf
I have some actual distances that can help with this - kav
Materials:
Wire
Paper Mache
Create texture/color/etc
9 groups
Sun
8 planets
Research Goals
Diameter
Mass
Color
Surface Features
Texture
Climate
o Extension
Make a new planet digitally or w/ extra materials
Make our moon?
Boy loves planets video
Planets Personification
o Core Idea: Solar System
o Have students become experts on a
particular planet and give it a personality,
then write a play to represent their planet
o Would bring in ELA
Density vs. Mass
o Core Idea: Density vs. Mass

There HAS to be some kind of awesome

activity for this...its such a counterintuitive
point
o We can try and relate this to gravity - some
kind of PBL question like why is the Earth
round? Why isnt it a cube or pyramid? - kav
How High Can You Jump? (Warm Up)
o Use math to calculate heights of jumps on
different planets
o
