The Wonderful World of Co-curricular Activities

What another great week of learning and activities at BIFS! This weekend, BIFS is taking a historic step in
expanding co-curricular activities by hosting a weekend math and student leadership workshop for students in
Korea and Japan with the Asia International Schools Association (AISA). Additionally, BIFS has two teams
competing in Korea Robot Championship in Seoul and we just enjoyed the elementary schools drama
production of Flakes! Students at BIFS have a rich array of wonderful activity opportunities as part of their
educational experience! Have you ever wondered why does BIFS put so much effort into providing such a
comprehensive program of activities for our students?
First and foremost, by examining our guiding statements we can see why activities are valued as an important
part of our mission. Our vision is for our students to develop and pursue their passions, be successful and
contribute to a positive global future. Students experiences through our co-curricular programs are a vital
strategy for each of them to develop and to pursue their passions.
Our commitment is also supported by research that points to the benefits students derive from participation in
co-curricular activities at school. For example, students who are involved in co-curricular pursuits tend to have
stronger levels of achievement and learning due to increased self-esteem, stronger sense of belonging,
increased motivation and a better organization and time management. Additionally, students learn new personal
and social skills such as critical thinking, teamwork and leadership. Co-curricular activities also foster a sense of
commitment to a cause or purpose and they help cultivate a focus on service to others. These are all outcomes
BIFS desires for each of our students!
Hopefully, our community can see the importance of co-curricular activities and assist us by supporting the
various activities and encouraging your students to diversify and deepen their experiences as they successfully
pursue their passions! Go BIFS! Go Bears!

ISA ACER Testing

One of the questions parents always ask is, How is my child doing?. A related question is Compared to
what?. This is a particularly critical question for families away from home, where it is hard to know how systems
and standards compare. At BIFS, one way we make such comparisons with other like schools is through the
International Schools Assessment (ISA).
What is ISA?
International Schools Assessment (ISA) is an annual assessment programme that has been developed to
measure skills in mathematical literacy, reading and writing of students in international schools. ISA is based on
the internationally endorsed reading and mathematical literacy frameworks of the Programme for International
Student Assessment (PISA) developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. A
growing number of international schools now use ISA, here in the Asia Pacific and around the world.
Later in the year, you will receive ISA reports that provide descriptive information about what students know and
can do. The results are equated from year to year so they can be used to track changes over time at individual
and school level.
What is ISA NOT?
ISA is not a competitive test. It is not a test that students pass. It will not be used for purposes other than
providing data to us, you, and your child, about his/her learning. While we give opportunities for practice,
students do not prepare for the tests, since they are consistent with what students learn on a regular basis.
How do the assessments work?
Students complete a reading literacy test, a mathematical literacy test and two writing tests, each of which takes
between 45 minutes and one hour to administer. The tests include both multiple-choice and open-ended tasks.
When is the ISA testing at BIFS?
The tests will be taken by students in Grades 3-10 on February 17th and 18th. They will be taken in normal
school conditions e.g. in homeroom groups, in conditions that are familiar to our students.
If you have questions, please contact:
Jenny Montague, MYP Coordinator (jmontague@bifskorea.org)
Leda Cedo, PYP Coordinator (ledacedo@bifskorea.org)

BIFS Head to Korea Robot Championship!

This weekend we will be sending two teams to the National Korea Robotics Championship at the KINTEX in
Seoul. Ms. Eksteen is coaching one team from the Elementary School, and they are called the Nuclear Extreme
Team. The second team is being formed from the Middle High School and is coached by Mr. Melville and Mr.
Furmston, and they have named themselves Bearbotics.
This will be the second time that BIFS will be competing in the National Robotics Championship, but this is the
first time that we are entering multiple teams.
After months of designing, building, and programming our Robots for the National Robotics Championships we
were finally ready to take on this monumental challenge. The teams will be judged in 3 areas which are:
1. Teamwork
2. The Robot Games
3. The Project
The first thing that they will look at when we come to the championship will be how well our teams have worked
and learnt together. They also look at how team members listen to each other and support each other. Most
importantly they want to see that our team has fun working together.
In terms of the Robot Games we have to design and program our robots to try and complete 12 separate
missions within 2 minutes and 30 seconds. These missions are all based around the environment and details of
the missions are shown on the First Lego League Website:
http://www.firstlegoleague.org/challenge/2015trashtrek
Finally our teams will have to complete the project which will culminate in our teams having to present an
original idea which could help our global environment to a panel of Judges.
Good Luck Teams!

Changes to School Lunch System

School lunch is provided either through Meal Pass (semester or annual payment plan) or the new daily pay
Meal Coupon system.
For the daily pay option, students can purchase coupons at the automated coupon vending machine located
in the cafeteria. Students then should turn in their coupon in the coupon box before meal.
Please email school.lunches@bifskorea.org for questions regarding school lunch.
Meal Pass
The school will provide a sticker to students who are on the Meal Pass--homeroom teacher will hand out the
stickers to students. Please place this sticker at the back, bottom section of the student ID card. Students with
Meal Pass can simply show the sticker to eat school lunch and no coupon is required.
The Meal Pass sticker is nontransferable. You may not use someone elses Meal Pass to eat lunch.
If the Meal Pass sticker is lost, it can be reissued upon verification.
There will be no refund for skipped or missed lunch due to students personal reasons (i.e. absence).
If a student transfers to a different school, the remaining lunch fee will be refunded. (Student must return the
Meal Pass back to school)
Meal Coupon
Customers can purchase Meal Coupon through the automated coupon machine located in the school
cafeteria. You can purchase the coupon with cash or Korean debit/credit card.
Those with daily pay program or school visitors can use this option.
If you want, you can purchase coupons in bulk (10 or 20) in advance through the coupon machine. This will
avoid lines at the machine during lunch time.
The school is not responsible for lost coupons and there will be no refund.
* Packed Lunch Request for Field Trips
If a student doesnt have a Meal Pass, and wishes to purchase packed lunch for field trip, student must submit
the Meal Coupon to homeroom teacher or the teacher in charge of the field trip.
Students from the ELC to Grade 2 can purchase and turn in the Grade 3 through 5 Meal Coupon for field
trips.

Back by popular demand, we will host an ELC parent coffee on reading aloud to your child. Sure, we all read to
our kids and understand how important this is to developing pre-literacy skills. However, there are certain
questioning and reflection techniques you can use when reading with your child that will help to build a deeper
understanding of stories and language. You can also practice pre-literacy reading with your child by teaching
some critical reading skills, such as book orientation, finger pointing, and initial letter-sound recognition. These
skills and concepts can lead to stronger reading skills in your child as he/she becomes an independent reader.
Please join our ELC Parent Coffee at the ELC Hall on February 17th, Wednesday, from 2:15-3:15.

MHS Homework Guidelines and Procedures

To assist teachers, students and parents a group of MHS teachers have collaboratively developed Homework
Guidelines and Procedures. The purpose of the guidelines and procedures are to ensure transparent
communication and clarity of expectations. Our goal is to develop structures and frameworks to help students to
become successful and independent learners.
MHS Homework Guidelines and Procedures
Busan International Foreign School (BIFS) is committed to providing students with a balanced education. We are
concerned with the academic growth of students as well as their social and physical development.
Homework:
Homework is typically defined as any tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are meant to be carried
out during non-school hours (Cooper, 1989a, p. 7).
The purpose of homework is to:
practice skills and reinforce content,
preview material for class discussion (in the flipped classroom), and
study for quizzes and formative and summative assessments.
Benefits of homework:
Purposeful homework can help students develop the ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills essential for a 21st
century learner.
Self Management skills: organization, planning, time management, prioritizing and persistence and
perseverance,
Thinking: independent problem solving, critical thinking, creative thinking and retrieving, applying and
transferring knowledge, skills and understandings.
Missing or Incomplete Work:
Missing or incomplete homework is considered a behavior issue and not an academic issue and will be
addressed accordingly.
Students may be asked to complete missing work during breaks or after school under teacher supervision.
If a pattern of missing or incomplete work exists, teachers will send a Progress Report home and students will
work with the teacher, principal and/or counselor to resolve the issue.

MHS Homework Guidelines and Procedures - Continued

Amount of time spent on homework:
The Middle/High School takes a scaffolded approach to the amount of homework which can be assigned, which
takes into consideration a childs age, language and learning levels and programme requirements.
Hallmarks of effective homework:
It has a clear academic purpose that both teachers and students understand and buy-into.
It is an efficient means of demonstrating understanding - in short, no busywork.
It provides students with some control over their own learning and a sense of ownership.
It gives students a sense of competence. Homework should be differentiated in both content and quantity so
that students can complete homework on their own in a reasonable length of time.
It is visually comprehensible. Looks matter. Students are more motivated to do homework that is visually
uncluttered
Teachers, Students and Parents responsibilities:
Teachers
o Record all homework and summative tasks on Managebac in a timely manner, preferably during
the day or immediately following the completion of the school day. Weekend assignments should
be entered on Friday.
o Ensure that no more than 2 assessments are assigned on a given day.
Students
o Check Managebac on a daily basis.
o Discuss any problems completing homework with the teacher as soon as possible.
Parents - As students move through the MYP to DP, students will become independent, but parent
monitoring is still essential.
o Assist student with checking Managebac.
o Monitor students work on Managebac.
o Communicate any concerns with a teacher in a timely manner.

This past week the girls and the boys second teams made the big bus trip to Seoul to compete in the KISAC
Blue tournament hosted by BIS Canada. Competition was fierce as we faced off with many of the schools that
are in Seoul and Jeju. Congratulations to our BIFS girls team who won three games back to back in the double
elimination tournament to win the entire tournament and bring home the KISAC Plaque! They won games
against NLCS (North London Collegiate School and KIS Jeju).
On the boys side of the tournament, BIFS clawed their way to a 5th place finish and played some very strong
teams. We know that they will come back strong and practice hard for our next meeting on February 26-27
KISAC RED @ CCS Seoul!
Middle School Volleyball Excels in Geoje
This past Saturday the girls and boys volleyball teams boarded the bus for the International School of Geoje.
Each team faced off against 6 teams from the SKAC conference. BIFS fielded three teams of girls athletes and
two teams of boys athletes. For many of the Middle Schoolers this was their first taste of competition in the
tournament format. The tournament was set up as more of a friendly competition but the teams battled it out
with the most exciting game going to BIFS and DIS. Unfortunately, they edged us out in the end winning the last
set 15 - 13. We have set our sights to change the outcome for the KISAC Red Tournament hosted by BIFS on
February 19-20th.
