Jesus goes to Praetorium

The Praetorium would
have been this open
courtyard in the center of
Pilates dwelling within
the fortress of Antonia.
The soldiers would have
led him there. Some
people would have had
access but not everyone
could have had access to
this area.

Jesus was surrounded
by a company of
soldiers. Sources differ
but it seems like this
would have been 8
men.

Stripped and robed

Jesus was clothed with a purple robe.
Purple was a color worn exclusively by
Royalty because it was made from
extracting very small bits of purple dye
from a Phoenician mollusk. Up to 12,000
mollusks would be needed to create 1
royal robe. It was labor intensive and
expensive!

Jesus was completely at their mercy. He was

bound and weary from beatings, he knew he
had to follow through. But it was humiliating
and painful.

This is in not
a physically
painful
event,
however it
would have
been
emotionally
difficult. It is
a sign of
supreme

anchored to a post to ensure
that his back, upper arms
and thighs were completely
exposed. And that he
couldnt protect himself.

After such a brutal beating, Jesus would have had very

little intact skin on his back. The clothing put back on
him would have been very painful. If any of the blood
dried it would have dried into the fibers of the fabric
which would have been ripped open again once they
removed this garment prior to nailing him to the cross.

Jesus was experiencing shock due to blood loss.

The soldiers would have wanted this journey to
end and as Jesus collapsed they grabbed Simon
who would have had the strength to carry the
cross. What a heavy and bloody burden.
