Context:
Thisbookhascompellingvisualsthatwillappealtothestudents,aswellas
captivatingtheirinterestbecauseoftheHalloweenthemeinthebooksoclosetoHalloween.
TheartfulthinkingroutineanduseofvisualsmeetsNationalCoreArtsStandardsforVisual
Arts.PredictionisaSOLthatthestudentsshouldreachin2ndgrade.Wehaveinformallyused
predictioningroupreadaloudsalready,andthestudentshaveshownthattheyknowtheideaof
predicting.Throughmypriortwolessonsoverthepasttwodaystheyhaveexploredpredicting
previewingwordsfromthetexttopredict,andusingpriorknowledgeofthestorytopredictwhat
willhappennext.Thislessonwillhavestudentsusevisualstopredictwhatwillhappeninan
unfamiliarstory.

Lastly,thestudentswilllookatthepictureasifitistheendingofthestory,andmakea
predictionastowhathappenedinthestorytoleaduptothatpoint.

Worksheetforstudentstorecordtheirartfulthinkingpredictions(Iwillmake)

Procedure:
1. Haveworksheetsalreadyprintedoutandslidereadytobeprojected.(pictureprintedon
theworksheetaswelljustincaseoftechnologicaldifficulties.)
2. Introducethebookbyshowingthecoverandsayingthetitleofthebook.
3. Explaintostudentsthatwearegoingtouseanimagefromthebooktobuildthree
possiblepredictionsforourstory.Butfirstwerejustgoingtolookattheimageforafew
moments,silentlysothewholeclasscanprocessontheirown.
4. FirsthavethestudentsfillouttheBeforesection,givethemabout5minstocomplete
this,thenintroducetheMiddlesectionwithanother5mins,andfinallytheAftersection.
5. Collecttheworksheetsandhavestudentsmovetothecarpet,callingbytableoncethey
showtheyareready
6. Readthebookaloud,pausingoncewegettotheillustrationtodiscusswhatsectionof
thestorytheillustrationisfrom,andhowthataffectsourpredictions

assistanceinhavingthemvoicetometheirpredictions,andhelpthemtoputwhattheysaidon
paper.IhavetwostudentswhoIanticipatewillfinishveryquickly,andIwillchallengethemto
haveaconversationwitheachotherabouthowtheirpredictionswouldchangebyshowingthem
onemoreillustrationfromthebook.Icollecttheworksheetsinbetweentohelpavoidstudents
frommarkingouttheiroriginalthoughtsandchangingtheirpredictionstomatchthebook.This
willhelpmystudentswithlesswillpowertokeeptheirpredictionsgenuine.
