Experimental determination of Heat of Reaction called calorimetry and the apparatus used is
as the bomb calorimeter is shown in figure. This appratus was devised by Berthelot (1881) to
measure the heat of combustion of organic compounds. A modified form of the apparatus
shown in figure consists of a sealed combustion chamber, called a bomb, containing a
weighed quantity of the substance in a dish along with oxygen under about 20 atm pressure.

Q.1
In a constant volume calorimeter, 3.5 g of a gas with molecular weight 28 was burnt in
excess oxygen at 298.0 K. The temperature of the calorimeter was found to increase from
298.0 K to 298.45 K due to the combustion process. Given that the heat capacity of the
calorimeter is 2.5 kJ K1, the numerical value for the enthalpy of combustion of the gas in kJ
mol1 is

Two solutions initially at 25C were mixed in an adiabatic constant pressure Calorimeter.
One contains 400 ml of 0.2 M weak monoprotic acid solution. The other contain 100 ml of
0.80 M NaOH. After mixing temperature increased to 26.2 C. How much heat is evolved in
the neutralization of 1 mole of acid? Assume density of solution 1.0 g/cm3, and specific heat
of solution 4.2 J/g-K. Neglect heat capacity of the Calorimeter.
Ans. 31.5 kJ/mole
