Walt Disney
Walter Elias "Walt" Disney (1901-1966) was an American industrialist, animator, cartoonist,
producer, director, screenwriter, philanthropist and voice actor. He is regarded as an international
icon, well known for his influence and contributions to the field of entertainment during the 20th
century. He is a major figure within the American animation industry and throughout the world.
He co-founded Walt Disney Productions, which later became one of the best-known motion
picture production companies in the world.
As an animator and entrepreneur, Disney was particularly noted as a film producer and a popular
showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. He and his staff created
some of the world's most well-known fictional characters including Mickey Mouse, for whom
Disney himself provided the original voice. During his lifetime he received four
honorary Academy Awards and won 22 Academy Awards. Disney built many theme parks such
as Disneyland, Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland
Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland.
Most of his childhood was spent in Marceline, Missouri, where he began drawing, painting and
selling pictures to neighbors and family friends. Disney attended McKinley High School in
Chicago, where he took drawing and photography classes and was a contributing cartoonist for
the school paper. At night, he took courses at the Chicago Art Institute.
Walt faced many difficulties during his career. Most of his brothers tried to run away from home
due to his father creating family problems. At age 22, he experienced bankruptcy after the
failure of a cartoon series in Kansas City and headed to Los Angeles with $40 cash and few of
the personal belongings to become an actor but never succeeded. During one of the productions
he was kicked out from his own production.
