REFLECTION

CEIT 319

The reason why we chose this topic, Food and Drinks, is that it is a more convenient topic to
give attractive exercises and basic, useful language patterns. As it contains basic necessary
communication language skills, it would be beneficial for children to integrate them into their
real life. In addition, it will be easy for us to find appropriate colourful materials proper for
the 4th grade students. We spent most of our time in filling in the weekly plan and lesson
plans because we continuously changed the exercises and add new ones to the lessons. It was
a little bit challenging for us to go parallel with the plans and decide on how to integrate the
materials into the lesson.

INTEGRATING THE ASSURE MODEL

Analyze Learners:
For this phase we examined what the students knowledge was at the end of the previous
lesson from Talim ve Terbiye Kurumu . The learners were already familiar with the present
simple tense and some simple grammar topics. We decided to build on that knowledge step
by step.

State Objectives:
We stated proper objectives that we believe our students will be successful. We concern about
our students' oral proficiency. To make our objective more real, we provide our students with
speaking activities. Also, we want our students to make use of their knowledge in different
concepts.

Select and Design Materials:

We paid attention to select proper materials which are appropriate to the learners' level and
also we tried to make it as much attractive as possible. In addition, we also aimed to appeal to
different intelligences and different skills to reinforce the learning process. As the unit was
also convenient for different variety of materials such as different didactic texts, very
colourful and interesting visuals, interactive and entertaining videos enabling students to
actively participate in the classroom activities. We used software such as Prezi, Bubbl.us,
Obsurvey, Stupeflix, and Easel.ly in our lessons.

Utilize Media and Materials:

We chose types of media in accordance with skills we aimed to reinforce by making it
interesting and enjoyable for students. For example, we decided on to begin with a song to the
first lesson getting the attention of learners, and continue with a Prezi presentation to make
some grammar patterns make more clear for them. After the presentation, we also prepared an
interactive video with Stupeflix which enable us to evaluate whether the topic was clearly
understood. For the second week, we used Bubbl.us and Easel.ly to provide them interesting
but at the same time useful visuals for the new language items.

Require Learner Response:

We prepared visual cards for a kind of game in which students would have opportunity to
communicate with each other while trying to explain the fruit or vegetable they have in their
cards. By this way, we would be able to acquire learner participation. In addition we also
prepared a video showing first the picture expressing a physical state and then waiting for a
while for the learners to guess the name of it.

Evaluation:
Evaluation takes place throughout the lessons, We observe their performances in terms of
pronunciation or using the newly presented language items while they are playing games and
communicating with each other. In addition, we also provide them with the activity handouts
for the actual assessment.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES

Materials that we used in our lessons are very variable ones because they are the tools which
enable us to make our lesson more fun. Using these materials requires some plans but by
having an idea about the process that we have makes our material use more specific and more
clear. If we talk about our materials that we used, we can start with the first week ones. Prezi,
Grammar handouts are included as materials to our lectures. Prezi is used to teach the
grammar topic which is called as Quantifiers. Grammar handouts supported our grammar
topic and it made the information more clear in students minds. In the second week, we

added Visual cards, Word game, easel.ly and bubbl.us. Visual cards are the ones that carrying
information about the subject and make the lecture more visual than just hearing. Games are
always fun and the Word game is used to have fun in the class and supporting the knowledge
that students already have. Easel.ly also makes the lesson more visual because the poster that
we prepared was including most of the part what we talked about in the lass. Bubble.us is an
example that giving an idea about what the students learned or will learn during the session.
In week three, Reading Text, Grammar Handout, Quiz are included in the class. It is a review
week and all things are about what students learned in the past two weeks. They determine
whether we became successful or not about teaching this topic. It also shows the level of the
students of these weeks topics.
Techniques are the ways that teacher follows to teach the lesson in a more beneficial way.
We also used some techniques to make our lesson to be more useful and more successful for
the students. In the first week, we worked with Presentation and Cooperative learning. We
attached Prezi to follow the way of presentation. Secondly, we focused on cooperative
learning because we believe that peer learning is also so important for the improvement of the
students. In the second week, we followed Cooperative learning, Communicative Language
Teaching and Direct Method. We explained Cooperative learning and Communicative
language teaching has some same points with that. Both of them believes the peer learning
and learning from each other so our techniques support one another. Also, we dealt with direct
method and we can say that we give importance to use of language as much as the grammar.
In the final week, Question-Answer Drill and Direct Method are used. As it is a review week,
we focused on the Question-Answer Drill to check whether they get what we taught in the last
two weeks and we focused on the use of language as well.
