Liberal Party History


When it started : August 31, 1873
What they did: Liberals have created many majority governments and have provided Canada
with nine prime ministers.
Who are important figures: Alexander Mackenzie was the first leader of the Liberal Party
(Prime Minister 1873 - 1878)
Wilfrid Laurier was the second leader of the Liberal Party (Prime Minister 1896-1911) which was
during the First World War.
William Lyon Mackenzie King was a leader during the Great Depression and the Second
World War.

Another important figure was Louis St. Laurent.
Lester Pearson, a Nobel Prize winning former diplomat and secretary of state became
liberal leader in 1958 and led the party back to federal power in 1963.
Under the Pearson government, three important achievements: the national medicare
program, the Canada Pension plan, and a new Canadian flag.
Pierre Trudeau came to power in 1968.
Jean Chretien won the leadership in 1990.

Justin Trudeau was born on Christmas day,
December 25, 1971. He was the eldest son of
Pierre Trudeau who was a former prime minister
of Canada. His brother died right before his dad.
Pierre Trudeau died on September 28, 2000.
Justins father was named Pierre Trudeau and his
mothers name was Margaret Sinclair. Justin is 43
years old. He is married and has three kids.
Trudeaus wifes name is Sophie Gregoire. Justins
youngest brothers name was Michel Trudeau.

Liberal Beliefs
Economy/Taxes: They want to lower taxes for middle class families. No
country was better placed to take advantage of those new opportunities
in the global economy than Canada .
Immigration: Justin Trudeau is trying to accept more refugees from Syria.
Environment: In the words of Justin Trudeau: Ive always believed that
when it comes to our environment, we Canadians get it. & It is time
Canada put a price on carbon dioxide pollution.
They believe that U.S. and Canada should be more united than they
currently they are, but stay different countries.

Positives

He is trying to help the refugees
from Syria.
He is trying to create jobs for
young Canadians.
He wants to cut taxes for middle
class families.
He is investing in having good
homes and good health care.

Negatives

They sometimes pick bad leaders.

The don't like to keep in touch
with Quebec.
They want to remake the entire
voting system: Ensuring that
2015 will be the last federal
election conducted under the
first-past-the-post voting
system, said Justin Trudeau.

His father, Pierre Trudeau, was Prime Minister of Canada (1919 - 2000).

Justin Trudeau is currently MP of Papineau, Quebec.

He was a teacher who taught social studies and French at West Point
Grey Academy and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in
Vancouver, British Columbia.

He was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on December 25, 1971.
