3. Beginning lesson Discussion
a. Objectives:
i. Psychomotor-The students will be able to throw, catch and
field ground balls following proper form and technique at
least 3 times by the end of the lesson.
ii. Cognitive-The students will be able to explain the difference
between catching a ball above waist and below the waist.
iii. Affective-student will exhibit responsible personal and
social behavior that respects self and others in physical
activity settings.
4. Catching and throwing drill
a. Catching Cues:
i. Keep eye on ball
ii. Reach towards ball.
iii. Give with ball as ball (bring ball into body).
iv. Pinkies together if ball is below waist.
v. Thumbs together if ball is above waist (Triangle with hands).
vi. Use non-throwing hand to help squeeze the ball
b. Throwing Cues:
i. Point non-throwing side/shoulder to the target (i.e., if left
handed thrower, point right shoulder/side towards target).
ii. Throwing arm way back behind head. Weight is on back foot.
iii. Step with your opposite foot towards target (i.e., if throwing
with left hand, step towards target with your right foot).
iv. Follow through by letting your throwing arm come across the
opposite side of your body. Snap forearm and wrist.
c. Drill:
i. Students partner up and practice throwing/catching 10-15
feet apart (5-10 min)
1. Walk around and give specific individual feedback
one-on-one
ii. Quick Catch Competition: see how many catches can get in 1
minute (do this 2-3x and have students try to beat their
record the second/third time)
iii. Dont Drop Competition: partners throw and catch back and
forth; if they drop it they are out. When it is down to final 4-5
have students back up to increase difficulty
5. Fielding ground balls
a. Cues:
i. Ready position: Weight evenly distributed, feet wider than
shoulder width, knees bent Extend arms downward into the
path of the ball. Watch the ball into your non-dominant hand
and go to the ball.
ii. Cover the ball with throwing hand after ball enters nondominant hand.
iii. Cradle the ball into chest area
iv. Transfer ball into throwing hand and point non-throwing
shoulder to target
v. Follow through with the throwing arm across your body
b. Drill:
i. Partners toss and field ground balls with each other (5-10
minutes).
ii. Walk around and give specific individual feedback one-onone
