Experiment No: 04

Experiment Name: Study of both the common mode and difference mode of differential
Amplifier.
Objectives: Our main objective was to design or analyze circuit for two types of differential
Amplifier and calculate the Common Mode Rejection Ratio.

a) Differential Amplifier (Common Mode):

Circuit:
R3
10k

+ 15 V
R1
1k
+ V o = m ( V i - V i ) = 0
R2
+ 1k
5 V
- 15 V
R4
10k

Data Collection:
Here,
Theoretically: V0 = m ( Vi - Vi ) = 10×0 = 0 V
But Practically: V0 = 50 mV = 50×10-3 V
V0 50×10-3
Gain: A C = = = 0.01
Vi 5

b) Differential Amplifier (Difference mode):

Circuit:
R3
10k

+ 15 V
R1
1k
+
R2
+ V2 1k
4 V V o = m ( V 1 - V 2 )
+ V1 - 15 V = 1 0 ( 1 ) = 1 0 V
R4
5 V 10k
Data Collection:
Here,
Theoretically: V0 = m ( V1 - V2 ) = 10×1 = 10 V
But Practically: V0 = 10V
V0 10
Gain: A D = = = 10
V1 − V2 1
Calculation:

AD 10
So, Common Mode Rejection Ratio, CMRR= = = 1000
AC 0.01

Discussion: In our previous experiment, we learnt about the design or analyzing circuit for two
types of differential Amplifier and calculate the Common Mode Rejection Ratio. In theoretically
the CMRR should be infinite, but practically due to the output of the common mode differential
amplifier is not zero, so the CMRR do not come out with an infinite value. So we can assume
that the higher value of CMRR gives the quality of Op-Amp.
