I. CourseDescription
ThisyearlongcollegepreparatorycoursebuildsonwhatstudentshavelearnedinAlgebra1.The
focuswillbeonusingfunctionstorepresentrealworldsituationsandtosolveproblems.Thestudyof
functionswillincludelinear,absolutevalue,quadratic,exponential,logarithmic,andrationalfunctions.
Studentswilllearnnewconceptssuchascomplexnumbers,logarithms,conicsections,probability,
andstatistics.

V. Methodology
Varyingteachingmethodswillbeusedineachunittoreachstudentswithdiverselearningstyles.
Theseteachingmethodsincludeprojects,classworkinstations(multipleactivitiesinoneperiod),
groupandpartnerwork,criticaldiscussion,writtenreflections,directinstruction,guidedpractice,
independentpractice,flexiblegroupings,useofvarioustechnologies,multipleintelligencestrategies,
investigations,andstudentpresentations.

VI. Methodsofassessment
AvarietyofassessmentsatGuajomeParkAcademyisanintegralpartoftheteachingandlearning
experience.Theuseofformativeandsummativeassessments,includingperformancetasks,willbe
usedthroughoutthecourse.Formativeassessmentswillbeusedtoregularlyevaluatethe
effectivenessofbothteachingandlearningprocesses.Thisisessentialinallowingteachersand
studentstoidentifystrengthsandweaknesses.Summativeassessmentsincludeexaminations,
benchmarks,writingandquizzeswhichmeasurethestudentsunderstandingofthematerialinthe
unit.Authenticassessmentintheformofperformancetasksorprojectswillallowstudentsto
demonstratetheirknowledgeinavarietyofways.Thepurposeandmeansofeachassessmentwill
alwaysbeexplainedtothestudents.
