Introduction
Alaina was a first-year Resident Assistant at CTY, where she quickly grew into
one of our most responsible and organized RAs.
Working with Students
At the beginning of the summer, Alaina worried about how she could possibly
control fifteen girls, but her fears soon proved to have little ground. From the
beginning of the first session, Alaina was able to firmly convey the rules to
her students, while letting them know that they could bring any questions or
concerns to her. From this starting point, Alaina was able to be a mentor to
her girls, as they would often bring her their problems and class gossip. When
issues did arise within her hall, Alaina was able to calmly deal with them,
showing one of her greatest strengths- patience. Throughout both sessions,
Alainas ability to gain the trust and respect of her students while maintaining
an authoritative presence on the hall made her an exceptional RA.
Contributions to the Residential Program
In regards to activities, Alaina worked hard to create fun, more relaxed
activities. Alaina led activities such as sticker tag and a Jane Austen-inspired
tea party. On one occasion when her supplies did not arrive on time for a
painting activity, Alaina was able to improvise with the few supplies she could
find, showing her true versatility. In committees, Alaina was often one to take
on the more organizational activities, like the time she served on the
Saturday Movie Night committee and stepped up to make the movie rosters
and place RAs in different viewing rooms. Alaina received a reputation for
being a reliably hard worker, as she would always step in when the group
needed her to take on extra work.
Working with Administration and Academic Staf
Alaina worked well with other staff members outside her peers. She often
kept in contact with her students instructors and TAs, always making sure to
express an interest in what each class was doing and sharing her concerns.
She made sure to visit her students classes, even if she found them
incredibly dull. In regards to administrative staff, Alaina was also incredibly
helpful, fostering positive energy among her peers and asking the SRAs for
advice when she had problems on her hall.
