Description
The main role of pharmacists is to fill prescriptions based on the instructions given by
physicians/ doctors on the proper amounts of medication to give to patients. They are also
expected to check if the patient is taking any other medications or if the patient has any
medical conditions that will interfere with the prescribed medication. They are expected to
give the patient the details of the medication such as: dosage amounts, potential side
effects, advice on diet exercise, and other medical advice. They also complete insurance
forms and work alongside with insurance companies to ensure patients get the medicines
they require.

Pharmacists work in pharmacies, including those in grocery and drug stores. They also
work in hospitals and clinics. Some pharmacists work for the government and the military.
In most settings, they spend much of the workday on their feet.

Main Duties

Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and
proper medication storage.
Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, to determine the needed ingredients, and to
evaluate their suitability.

Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files,
inventories, control records for radioactive nuclei, or registries of poisons, narcotics,
or controlled drugs.
Plan, implement, or maintain procedures for mixing, packaging, or labeling
pharmaceuticals, according to policy and legal requirements, to ensure quality,
security, and proper disposal.
Order and purchase pharmaceutical supplies, medical supplies, or drugs, maintaining
stock and storing and handling it properly.
Combine and dispense medications as prescribed by doctors and dentists, by
calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, or oversee these activities.
Assess the identity, strength, or purity of medications.
Analyze prescribing trends to monitor patient compliance and to prevent excessive
usage or harmful interactions.
Provide specialized services to help patients manage conditions such as diabetes,
asthma, smoking cessation, or high blood pressure.
Advise customers on the selection of medication brands, medical equipment, or
healthcare supplies.

Important Skills

Analytical skills. Pharmacists must provide safe medications efficiently. To do this,


they must be able to evaluate a patients needs, evaluate the prescribers orders, and
have extensive knowledge about the effects and appropriate circumstances for giving
out a specific medication.
Communication skills. Pharmacists frequently offer advice to patients. They might
need to explain how to take a medicine, for example, and what its side effects are.
They also need to offer clear direction to pharmacy technicians and interns.
Computer skills. Pharmacists need computer skills to use any electronic health record
(EHR) systems that their organization has adopted.
Detail oriented. Pharmacists are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the

prescriptions they fill, because improper use of medication can pose serious health
risks. Pharmacists must be able to find the information that they need to make
decisions about what medications are appropriate for each patient.
Managerial skills. Pharmacistsparticularly those who run a retail pharmacymust
have good managerial skills, including managing inventory and overseeing a staff.
