What are We Doing?

Inthefirstunitofourcourse,youwillbeexploringthefundamentalsofhowpeertutoringworksin
additiontowaysofthinkingaboutwritingthatcanhelpbothyouandthestudentsyouwillbeassistingin
FloridaStateUniversitysReadingandWritingCenter.Inordertobetterhelpyoudevelopasatutor,this
firstprojectasksyoutosynthesizeyourexperiencesasawriterwiththetextsandtheorieswewilldiscuss
inthecomingweekstooutlineamoreconcreteviewofhowyoubelievewritingworks.

How are We Doing It?


Inshortyoullwantto:
1. Carefullyreadthetextsfromthefirstfewweeksofthiscourse.
2. Choose
atleastthreetermsand/orconcepts
discussedinthefirstfewweekstodiscussinyour
theoryofwriting.
3. Choose
atleastthreereadings
fromclassyouwanttodiscussandintegrateintoyourtheoryof
writing(sodontjustpickonepieceandgetallthreeconceptsfromit).
4. Startresearchingandfindingtextsthat
buildonthetheoriesandconcepts
wediscussinthisfirst
unitofthecoursetofleshoutyourunderstandingoftheseconceptsandbeabletotheorizehow
youseethemworking.
5. Discusstheseideasandconceptsinrelationshiptoyourpersonalexperiencesasawriter(meaning
youdontneedtojustwriteformallyaboutthesourcesyouveselectedyoucanaddinpersonal
narrativesandreflectionsonyourpersonalwritingexperienceandprocess).
6. Providecitations(intextandaWorksCitedpageinMLAstyle)fortheresearchandresources
youusedbothfromthecourseandoutsideofit.
7. Asyouarerequiredtodoso,youmustvisittheRWCatsomestageofyourwritingprocess
forthisproject(thisdoesnotmeanorincludethedayitsdue,orwhenitstoolatetomake
anymeaningfulrevisionstoyourwork).

So, How Should I Approach This?

TheheartofthisprojectistosynthesizethewritingconceptsfromtheassignedreadingsfromWeeks14
withyourexperiencesasawriter.Youmaywanttothinkaboutthefollowingquestionsaswaystoenter
thisconversationandstartfleshingoutyourtheoryofwriting:
1. Whatideasdiscussedinthesefirstfewweeksresonatewithyouorintrigueyou?
2. Whatpersonalexperiencesspeaktothoseideas?How?
3. Whatkeyideasorconceptsguideyourunderstandingofwhatwritingis/doesandhowwriting
works?
Usingyourexperiencesinthecourseandyourexperiencesasawriter,thesequestionsmayhelpguide
youtowardssynthesizingourworkinthefirstunitwithyourexperiencesasawriter.

Why are We Doing This Project?


Thisprojectisdesignedtoencourageyoutodefineandrefineyourexperienceswithwritingbasedon
somereadingsandtheorythatmaybenewtoyou,anddoingsotobetterassistotherwritersintheRWC.
Asaresult,thisprojectencouragesyouto:
Articulateandreflectuponexperiencesthathavebeenformativeinyourunderstandingofhow
writingworks,whatwritingis,whatwritingdoes,andhowwritingfunctionsinourandyourlife.
PrepareforthediverseclienteleofFSUsRWC,wherestudentscanbeworkingonverydifferent
kindsofwritingfromarsumtoapoem,orfromamemotoadissertation.
Inshort,thisprojectshouldhelpyoufigureouthowyouunderstandwriting,andthushelpyouassist
otherswiththeirwritingprojects.
