schoolteacher,livesaloneinAtlanta,Georgia,except
forablackhousemaidnamedIdella(EstherRolle).
WhenMissDaisywreckshercar,herson,Boolie(Dan
Aykroyd),hiresHokeColeburn(MorganFreeman),a
blackchauffeurwhodroveforalocaljudgeuntilhe
recentlydied.MissDaisyatfirstrefusestoletHoke
driveher,butgraduallystartstoaccepthim.

WhenMissDaisyfindsoutthatHokeisilliterate,sheteacheshimhowtoread.AsMissDaisyandHoke
spendtimetogether,shegainsappreciationforhismanyskillsandthetwobecomefriends.AfterIdelladies
in1963,ratherthanhireanewmaid,MissDaisydecidestocareforherownhouseandcookherown
meals.Hokeassistswiththecookingandthetwoplantavegetablegarden.
Thefilmexploresracismagainstblacks,whichaffectsHokeatthattime.Thefilmalsotouchesonanti
semitismintheSouth.Afterhersynagogueisbombed,MissDaisyrealizesthatsheisalsoavictimof
prejudice.ButAmericansocietyisundergoingradicalchanges,andMissDaisyattendsadinneratwhich
Dr.MartinLutherKinggivesaspeech.SheinitiallyinvitesBoolietothedinner,buthedeclines,and
suggeststhatMissDaisyinviteHoke.However,MissDaisyonlyaskshimtobeherguestduringthecar
ridetotheeventandendsupattendingthedinneralone,withHokeinsultedbythemanneroftheinvitation,
listeningtothespeechonthecarradiooutside.
Hokearrivesatthehouseonemorningin1971tofindMissDaisyagitatedandshowingsignsofdementia.
HokecalmsherdownandMissDaisytellsHokethatheisherbestfriend.BooliearrangesforMissDaisy
toenteraretirementhome.In1973,Hoke,now81,retires.BoolieandHokedrivetotheretirementhometo
visitMissDaisy,now97.AsHokefeedsherandreminiscesaboutthemanyyearshespentdrivingher,the
imageofacarisseendrivingintothedistance.
