DIGITAL IDENTITY: SOCIAL MEDIA IN EMS

Social media use by EMS providers is under scrutiny due to HIPAA violations and other workplace
dilemmas. Working past these shortcomings, social media can be used positively by EMS providers to
further their education and careers through viral information sharing and interpersonal networking. This
course is designed to exhibit the values of a positive digital identity through social media as opposed to
the newsworthy negative instances through an ethical point of view.

Utilizing the characters in Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book", the qualities of Mowgli's mentors are
applied to mentorship in EMS. Evaluating the pros and cons of various mentorship methods through the
depiction of animated characters we will discuss what functions and qualities are important in an EMS
mentor. Adapted from a course written by Keith Widmeier for EMS Educators.

SPINAL INJURY MANAGEMENT IN THE POOL SETTING
PA Department of Health Continuing Education Course #007808 (3.5 Credits Med/Trauma)
A course designed to bring lifeguards and first responders together in coordinated training exercises
regarding spinal injuries in the pool setting. The differences in immobilization protocols and level of
training between lifeguards and first responders are discussed. Best practices for understanding and
overcoming these variations, in an effort to provide the best quality care, will be practiced. This course
includes both classroom and practical skills. Entering the water is an optional, but highly encouraged
component.
Note: This course requires access to a pool or other waterfront environment.

AIRWAY FOR BASIC LIFE SUPPORT


PA Department of Health Continuing Education Course #000297 (2.0 Credits Med/Trauma)
This program provides a back to basics approach to airway management at the BLS scope of practice.
Key topics will include anatomy & physiology, airway adjuncts, ventilations, and suctioning. Also
incorporated, is a brief introduction to waveform capnography (ETCO2) and its application as a BLS
provider. This course requires both psychomotor and cognitive proficiencies for successful completion.
Note: This course may include an optional swine lab if supplies and facilities permit.

LIFTING & MOVING


PA Department of Health Continuing Education Course #005261 (3.0 Credits Med/Trauma)
This course is designed to review EMS injury statistics and how to avoid becoming one! An interactive
polling system will be used throughout the course to compare the perceptions and experiences of
participants to the actual statistical data. It is highly recommended to bring an internet-capable device
to the course, mobile devices are acceptable.

PEDIATRIC TRANSPORT
PA Department of Health Continuing Education Course #008292 (1.5 Credits Med/Trauma)
The Pennsylvania Department of Health Bureau of EMS 2015 Basic Life Support Protocol revision
incorporated a number of changes regarding the safe transport of pediatric patients. Primarily, this
entailed securing pediatric patients in size-appropriate safety restraint systems or car seats in the
ambulance. This course applies the protocol using a variety of safety devices.
