Why a frat is good for you personally (resume builder) Being involved in greek life can
help your resume greatly. When applying for a job, having a position as a fraternity
chairman looks amazing on a resume. This proves to employers that you have first hand
experience in leadership, as well as the ability to work with others as a team or group.
Why a frat is bad for you personally (Criminal record) Fraternity brothers are more likely
to be arrested or charged with a crime than normal college students are. In 2004 at the
University of Iowa, a whopping 26.5% of those involved in greek life were arrested that
year. It took the University of Iowa nearly a decade to reduce the percentage of greeks
arrested to the same of normal students. (1)
Fraternities create lifelong brotherhoods (Connections) Members involved in greek life
are all around the country. They are in government, in some of the worlds largest fortune
500 company, or theyre just somebody you work with. But the bottom line is that theyre
everywhere, and that creates connections across the world. 30% of fortune 500
executives are greek (5)
They also kill people (hazing accidents)
o In a study done by Daily Collegian at Midwestern University, 127 17-20 year old
girls were followed and asked about whether or not they were rushing. Of the
accepted rushees, most tended to have higher levels of self-objectification.
o 3 in 5 college students are subjected to hazing during their college lives. Sadly,
there has been at least one hazing death a year since 1970. (2)
o In a hazing ritual gone wrong, Pi Delta Psi frat boys tackled a blindfolded
freshman while wearing a heavy backpack in order to be accepted into the frat.
Chun Michael Deng died of head trauma. (3)
Fraternities are involved in philanthropy (Charitable work, functions on campus). The
Fraternities and Sororties of the University of Rhode Island arent just for drinking and
partying. In only a week, all of the memebers of greek life pooled together and came up
with $ 70,000, which they donated to charities across Rhode Island.
That hides some ugly statistics. Here they are. (Rape, Death, general bad stuff. Less
personal than before): Fraternity brothers are 300% more likely to rape a woman than
non greek members of a college or university.
o In the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity of Georgia Institute of Technology, the inboxes of
fraternity members was an email with the discerning title of Luring Your
Rapebait The email explained how, in step-by-step instructions, how to get
lucky with a girl, with the aid of alcohol. (5)
o Banners at parties at many colleges, including Texas Tech University, read No
means yes, yes means Anal. (5)

Fraternities arent all social. Professional and community service fraternities exist (Why
these resources can help you) Not all fraternities are social. There are substancial
amounts of community service or professional fraternities in the world. These fraternities
are dedicated to either a specific subject, or a specific goal.
One bag egg spoils the dozen. (Some frats are good, sure, but social fraternities are a
huge problem). Absolutely, there are good frats, but the overwhelming majority are
focused on getting drunk, partying, breaking the law in the name of a good time, and
overall, being a glorified group of drunks.
