Rugby Rules
Tradition Rugby Rules:
1. Maximum of 15 players allowed on a team with up to 7 substitutes
allowed.
2. Matches are played in two 40 minute halves, with a maximum of a 10
minute halftime intermission. Games begin with a coin-toss to decide who gets
the ball first.
3. Any player who is on-side (behind the ball) can get the ball, run with it,
kick or pass it, score a try or be tackled (if they are carrying it). *Note: A player
may not come back to the ball to pick it up, they must have been behind it when it
got to the ground.
4. There are no forward passes allowed, just as in football after the ball
crosses the line of scrimmage.
5. The Advantage Rule: The referee will a.) Stop the game if letting play
continue will not help the other team & the rule breakers are penalized. b.) Allow
play to continue if there is a possibility that the other team may benefit. If the
other team does benefit, play just continues as if the rules have not been broken.
However, if the other team does not benefit, then play should be stopped and is
restarted at the place where the rules were broken. The rule breakers are
penalized.
6. Scoring Methods:
A Try is worth 5 points (A try is when a player crosses the try line and
grounds the ball)
A conversion is worth 2 points (A conversion is when a player kicks the
ball from the ground through the goalpost in a straight line from where the try was
scored) *This rule is very similar to the extra point in American football.*
A drop goal is worth 3 points (A drop goal is when, during play, a player
drops the ball and punts/kicks it through the goalpost and does not touch the
ground other than when it is kicked.)

25

*This rule is similar to the punt in American football except it is a scoring method in rugby.

**Students: For a complete list of Rugby rules, other than the major ones, visit this
website to learn more!
http://www.rugbyhow.com/basic-rugby-rules.html
--See below for modified rules.

Modified Rugby Rules for PE

1. All scoring rules will be the same as traditional rugby rules. (5 points for a
try, 2 points for a conversion, 3 points for a drop goal)
2. Matches will be played in one 12 minute game (Obviously we do not have
enough time to play two 40 minute halves with a halftime!)
3. Absolutely no tackling, we will be using belts as we did for our flag football
games. Minimal contact will be accepted as well. Always be aware of your
surrounding and be careful not to run into each other, pull the flags instead!
4. When converting a try, students will not need to ground the ball when they
cross the line, they only need to get across the line (similar to American football)
5. When attempting a conversion, students may choose to either kick the ball
traditionally off of a tee on the ground and through the goalpost or they may
attempt to drop kick the ball through the goalpost. Both of these methods will still
be worth 2 points, it is the student's preference which they want to attempt.
6. Rather than a coin toss, we will have the team captains briefly do 1round
of rock-paper-scissors to determine who gets the ball first.

Students, individually, will begin at the goal line (as we are on a football field) and have
3 attempts to drop kick the ball from there through the goal post. Each successful
attempt will be worth 1 point. They will then move back to the 10 yard line and have 2
attempts to drop kick the ball through the goalpost. These attempts will be worth 3
points each if successful. Finally students will move back to the 20 yard line and have
just one attempt at drop kicking it through the goalpost. If successful they will earn 5
points for that attempt. Students can earn as many as 11 points total. Also, if a student
makes a 0 at one distance, they will not move on to the next. Since we have 2
goalposts, one on each side of the field, we wills split up half of the class on each side
to do this challenge as efficiently as possible. Good luck to everyone and let's see who
comes out on top!
Challenge #2--Passing
For this challenge, students will participate as teams and earn points as a whole. This is
sort of a modified game to see which team can pass the best but also can use
teamwork to have a chance at success. What students must do is take a rugby ball and
stay within the normal game boundaries. There will be one other team playing defense
against them. The goal will be to continue legally passing the ball back and forth for the
longest amount of time possible without the defense stealing, knocking the ball down, or
dropping the ball. Students will also only be allowed 5 steps between each throw when
they have the ball. Simply, the team who lasts the longest wins. Good luck to everyone!

LSU TAKES THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THRILLING

FINAL OVER THE INDIANA HOOSIERS!!

38

Above: LSU mascot and player doing snow angels in the confetti after their big finals win over Indiana*

Indiana just couldnt overcome the dynamic two headed monster of Taylor Startz and
Micaela Bergel, for LSU as they fell in the final 35-12. It all started in the first minute of
the match when Startz took the ball quickly pitched it to Bergel who then passed it
farther to Startz who went racing down the sideline for the first try of the match. Steve
Francis then added the conversion kick to put LSU ahead 7-0 early. They never looked
back. The Tigers scored another 4 tries from (Bergel, Startz, and Justin Laing
respectively) with Francis converting one more conversion kick and Ian Kilcoyne adding
the other 3 conversion kicks for the match. Indiana did briefly threaten after being down
14-0 when Danielle Souza made multiple defenders miss nearly the end line to score
the try. The conversion was missed however to make the score 14-5. That was as close
as Indiana would get. Later on with less than a minute remaining, LSU could already
taste victory, they let Indiana score again on a long Mike Siwek run. (Christine McNeil
made the conversion kick) This brought the score to 35-12 but with the outcome already
decided long ago.
Some had thought this could be a game for the ages as LSU came into the finals
needing to beat Indiana twice (Indiana had beaten them earlier to knock them into the
loser's bracket. That made this their 3rd match of the tournament) to win the title. LSU
ended up winning that nail-biter 28-26 behind Startz and Bergel as usual (with Francis
being deadly accurate on his conversions as well).
We caught up with some of the players after the game.
Startz after the game said, it was really a tremendous effort by our team the entire
game. Micaela got going early and continued her phenomenal run and the whole team

39

kept feeding off her as we have been lately. And Steve and Ian with their conversions
are so reliable it's almost automatic every time. Im so proud of this team, its been a
long great run and a great way to end it.
We also got a chance to speak with the other half of the duo. Bergel said People were
really doubting me and us as a whole coming into the tournament so we really put that
chip on our shoulder to prove people wrong. We knew we had a great team capable of
great things and showed it today. Go Tigers!
In the end, it was a tremendous atmosphere all tournament long. Outstanding
jobs by all of these young men and women for an exciting, fun, competitive tournament!
