Total pts = 6 ____6_____

List and describe three (3) of the six (6) characteristics of a successful
secondary physical education program as discussed in Ch. 1. Be
prepared to share your responses in class.
1. A positive learning environment exists
A positive learning environment existing is a characteristic of a
successful secondary education program. This means that no matter what
the curriculum design or teaching method is, a positive and caring
atmosphere must be present for a successful PE program. This also means
that everything the teacher does should be positive, whether that is how the
teach, discipline, or motivate. Another example of this would be students
being rewarded in competitive situations during class regardless of the
outcome.
2. Student choice is offered
Student choice is another characteristic of a successful program.
That means students get an opportunity to select what they do or possibly
how they do something. For example, you could give students the choice of
of tennis, weight training, or racquetball over the course of a three week
unit. This is essential to a successful secondary PE program because it
creates a more positive learning environment and also because students
will be more motivated when they have some influence on the selection of
activities. Another reason this leads to a successful program is because
there are example of these types of classes leading to more students
choosing to take the class as well.

3. Students receive in-depth instruction

Students receiving in-depth instruction means starting from the base
and going up making developmentally appropriate progressions. For
example, it could be offering beginning, team, and recreational basketball.

Then the beginning class covers dribbling, passing, rebounding, etc. The
team class begins the inclusion of offensive and defensive strategy,
trapping techniques, and other strategic components. Then the recreational
class would be team and tournament play. This ends up as a result of the
progressions taught so all students can feel comfortable and ready for
recreational play. This can also coincide with student choice because if they
feel they still need more time at the beginning or team stages then they can
continue to learn and only extend when they feel comfortable. This is an
essential characteristic of a successful secondary PE program because it
can be the only experience they get at that type of level since not all
students play sports or join clubs outside of PE class. It also can help
students get experience and decide on things that they like and could find
an activity they could do for the rest of their life as well. All of these are
essential to a successful secondary PE program.
