Gary Gilmore's last words before he was executed

Statement of Purpose Hello, my name is Keahjai and today I am here to


convince you that executing someone on death row for doing an
unspeakable is inhuman, unconstitutional and can glorify the inmate on
death row

Statement of Relevance How can your audience relate to this topic?


My audience can relate to my topic if they have a family or friend on death
row and if they abolish it they would just have life instead of dying. My topic
has also been brought up in political debate.

Preview Statement Outline body of speech, i.e. In order to understand why


the death penalty should be abolished, we must first discuss the history of
the death penalty, the causes and effects of this issue, and possible
solutions.

Topic Sentence The execution of inmates following the death penalty is
inhumane

Historical Information Relevant to Topic On August 10 1982 Frank J


Coppola was executed by the electric chair. During his execution they had
to do two 55 second jolts of electricity because the first one failed. During
the second jolt you could feel the burning flesh and sizzling of his skin. His
head and legs than caught on fire. This was one of the first noted botched
execution.

Current Information Relevant to Topic On April 30 2014 Clayton Lockett


died of a heart attack due to a botched lethal injection. He was injected with
fifty milligrams of midazolam to sedate him so the other two injection can
be administered. Once he have received all the injection they check to see if
he was unconscious. The doctor said he was not unconscious so they waited
a few and then they checked again. This time the doctor says he is
unconscious. A few minutes after they said he was unconscious Lockett
started to move. He kicked his right leg while his head was rolling from side
to side he was feeling the pain of the effect of the lethal injection. When
they saw this they stop the execution and left Lockett there to die.

Why is this a problem in todays society? It is a problem because the


inmates are not treated like they are human.

Topic Sentence The execution of an inmate goes against the Eighth
Amendment of the Constitution therefore it makes it unconstitutional.

Causes There has been on many different occasions where the execution
of an inmate has failed and results in the execution being painful and brutal.

Effects The effect of having these failed execution it leads the inmate to
having to have an agonizing pain when its suppose to be painless.

Transition to Body Point 3 These failed attempts will bring the public eye
to the inmate on death row.

Topic Sentence Bringing the public into the issue of an inmate on death
row puts the inmate in the spotlight.

General Solution What would happen in an ideal world? (i.e. people would
not become serial killers)
What positive effects would this have?
If the united states were to abolish the death penalty the taxpayer money
will go to funding thing that will benefit them better. This is a positive effect
because now the money they used for the inmates on death row can go into
funding more important like education.

Topic Sentence I am bringing awareness to the taxpayer that abolishing
the death penalty it could benefit them

Description of Product I am going to make a spreadsheet of how much of


the taxpayer money goes into the death penalty.

Extension of Research How does this apply the knowledge you gained?
I have learned that the amount of money that goes into the death penalty is
tremendous. In California they have spent a quarter billion dollars on just
11 executions.

Benefit to Society How will others be positively affected by what you


created?It will bring awareness to how much of their money goes to paying
for the death penalty.
Transition to Conclusion The death penalty have cost the people a lot of
money when they can have their money used in better places.
CONCLUSION:
Restatement of Thesis & Main Points
Although a person has done an unspeakable crime they should not be
executed for it is inhumane, unconstitutional and can give fame to the
inmate on death row.

My audience can relate to my topic if they have a family or friend on death

Tie-back to Attention Grabber Dan Wieden was the founder of the slogan
just do it. He based the slogan off of a man on death row final words. The
man name was Gary Gilmore. Gilmore was a convicted murder. He was in
jail for half his life. The charge that would send him to death row was the
killing of two men during a robbery. They gave Gilmore the choice of how he
wanted to be executed and he chose the firing Squad. This is where he said
his last words that will live on forever in a shoe brand slogan Lets Do It.
