Overview

Students will work on how to outline as a class, putting their


information in the format.

Objectives

After this lesson students will have built an outline from their passages
and topic sentences.

strengthen writing that is clear and coherent, with some guidance
and support from peers and adults.
7.W.3.1:
Write arguments in a variety of forms that Introduce claim(s), acknowledge alternative or opposing claims
and use appropriate organizational structures.
Support claim(s) with logical reason and relevant evidence,
using accurate, credible sources and understanding of the topic
or text.
Establish and maintain a consistent style and tone appropriate to
purpose and audience.
Use effective transitions to create cohesion and clarify the
relationships among claim(s), reason, and evidence.
Provide a concluding statement or section that follows form and
supports the argument presented.

Procedures

1)
Teacher will start out by explaining the basics of an
outline format. 5 mins
2)
Then the teacher will create a fake outline as student fill
in their own information in the correct places. 10 mins
3)
After that students will write their introduction and
conclusion paragraphs. 15 mins
4)
Have students switch with desk-mates and proofread the

introduction and conclusion. 15 mins


5)
If there is time, students will correct the proofreading in
class, if not they need to take it into account as they put together
their paper.
6)
Before class ends tell students that they now have the
structure of their paper and they only need to add some sentences to
introduce the evidence and connect the topic sentences to the rest of
the paragraph. Remind students again of the HW written on the
board.
Extensions

ELL and students with IEPs may have trouble with all of the wordiness
of this lesson. The teacher will be available to help in any way possible.
ELL students could use an online translator to help with words that are
confusing or unknown.
