Rationale Why is it important for students to learn the content of the lesson?
It is important for the students to learn this content because it will give them a deeper
understanding of the holidays that are celebrated during wintertime. I calls for them to be
critical about how society treats these different celebrations and how they can be advocates
for acceptance and respect for others.

expected to demonstrate as a result of the lesson?
-The students will be able to write a persuasive paper using their knowledge and
class discussions
-The students will be able to write a persuasive paper using the correct format

- By turning in a paper that has examples from what we have discussed and their
own opinions

Section B: Introduction to Lesson
Purpose How will you state the purpose of the lesson?
The purpose of this lesson is for the students to write a 3 paragraph persuasive
paper on if saying Merry Christmas is disrespectful.
Prior learning What do students know? What can they do? What are they learning to
do? How will you make connections to prior learning?
- Knowledge on the holidays
- Knowledge of the discussion we had about the interviews
- Knowledge of the pro and con list of saying merry Christmas and saying Happy
Holidays
- Knowledge from the debate from both sides
- The three parts of a paper (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion)
- How to be persuasive
- How to write a paper that is persuasive
- How to type on a computer
- How to cite sources
Connections to personal/cultural/community assets How will you make connections to
your students strengths as a way to motivate students to engage in the learning activities

The students are going to be writing about their own personal beliefs on the topic
and will pull in ideas they have formed, ideas from people around them, larger scale
ideas to help them in their argument.

These papers are your own opinions of how Merry Christmas should be handled,
you are trying to convince someone to believe in your stance in the best way you
possibly can. Imagine if you were writing this to the president or someone high up in
government and trying to explain how things should be done, it is your job to give
them a good argument.

Continue to work on their paper and print it out for the next days class.
