Sanitary Procedures & Standard Precautions

The outline below highlights procedures for cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting materials along
with the implementations of universal/standard precautions.
I. There are differences in the meaning of Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting
A. Cleaning removes contaminates by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming
B. Sanitizing uses chemicals to kill the majority of the germs on a surface
C. Disinfecting uses chemicals to kill all of the germs on a surface
1. The formula for making a disinfecting solution of bleach and water is - cup of
___________ bleach + 1 gallon of cool water. Apply and let stand for 2 minutes or air dry.

II. For cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting materials use a bleach solution - 1 tablespoon of
---------bleach per quart of water made fresh daily). Blood spills or objects with blood on them
-----------need a stronger solution of cup bleach to 2 cups water. This should be done
regularly --------as needed.
A. Poisonous and toxic materials, including cleaning supplies, bleaches and insecticides,
-------------shall be labeled and stored in cabinets used for no other purpose and shall be
------------------------inaccessible to children.
B. Maintaining routine cleaning practices includes keeping materials organized, take out
--------------the trash every day, and keep tables, floor and bathrooms clean throughout the day as
-------------well as thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting at night.
III. Universal/standard precautions refer to the things that we do to limit the exposure of
blood/bodily fluids. The purpose of it and why we use it in the child care setting is to keep
ourselves and others safe from contagious diseases such as HIV, HBV, or HCV.
A. Procedures for proper hand washing - Wet your hands with water and put some soap
---------------on. Rub your hands together to make bubbles. Rub all around your hand, in circles.
----------------Rub in between your fingers and fingernails. Rinse off the soap with clean water.
Dry -------------hands with paper towel. Use another towel to close water tap
B. 1) Wash hands and put on disposable gloves. 2) Position the student (ensure safety) on
----------------a mat, paper-lined changing table, or commode. 3) Remove soiled diaper and place
----------------directly into a plastic-lined waste pail. 4) Cleanse the diaper area of the student with
----------------disposable wipes. 5) Place wipes directly in the plastic-lined waste pail. 6) Apply
------------------clean diaper. 7) Dispose of paper on the changing table or mat. 8) Remove gloves
------------------and wash hands. 9) Re-glove and clean table, mat, or commode with germicidal
--------------------solution. 10) Remove gloves and wash hands. 11) Note and report any
abnormal -------------------condition.
C. Whenever blood and body fluids are present, a barrier (latex rubber gloves**, thick
----------------layer of paper towels, or cloth) should be used to minimize exposure of the

attending --------------person while the injury is cleansed and/or dressed. Soiled clothes of the
injured person -------------must be bagged to be sent home. Place waste in a plastic bag for
disposal. Remove -----------------gloves and dispose in plastic bag. Thoroughly wash hands with
soap.
Conclusion/Closing: Use these procedures to best ensure a safe, clean, and healthy environment.
