OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:

Cross Curricular Lesson:

Art: Depiction (A learning experience)
Math: Describe the characteristics of 3-D and 2-D shapes, and analyze the
relationships among them

Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Art:

Component 4- Main forms and proportions: Students will learn the

shapes of things as well as develop decorative styles
Concept C: Shapes can be made using different procedures; e,g.,
cutting, drawing, tearing, stitching.

Math: Specific Outcome 3: Replicate composite 2D shapes and 3D objects

This lesson is a Christmas craft lesson of what we have been looking at all
units with our 2D shapes and 3D objects. This lesson deals with knowledge
that this outcome doesnt explicitly address. Such as knowing each
shape/object and their attributes so that students had the ability to sort
shapes/objects.

the same materials and following all of the same steps, each Santa will
still be unique.
Are students using the material that is provided for them?
Are they relating the construction to 2D shapes and 3D objects?
Students will be expected to modify their materials to create a unique
Santa and 2D shapes and 3D objects. Students compositions are not
expected to be perfect, but students will have to put in a solid amount of
effort. The students will all be creating a Santa but each of their Santas
will be a little different. Within the discipline of art, the products and the
performances are largely the same, which will be the case with this
lesson.
In relation to math, students will be expected to recall what shape and
object we are using while making the Santa. This is a great way for
students to have a fun way to recap our shapes and objects unit before
Christmas comes.

Learning Activity
#1

Have all materials cut out and ready for students to use.
Introduction
Students will be coming in from recess, have all materials
ready for when students come in. Greet the students at the
door and tell them to quietly sit down in their desk so that we
can get ready to learn with math. If student still need a quick
reminder to hurry and sit down, use the countdown method: 54-3-2-1 Ready Set! You bet!
Have a quick discussion at the beginning of the lesson will
ensure that students are in the math zone. We have been
talking about different 2D shapes and 3D objects. Can
someone tell me some of the shapes and objects we have been
learning?
Today is very focused on building shapes and objects to
build a craft. Students are expected to have their
listening ears on and showing respect towards whoever
is talking. Building a Santa can be tricky, so we need to
make sure that we are listening to directions and when
Miss. Benson is talking, we are not talking, we are
listening and we are not playing with anything on our
desks.
In addition, when students are building/creating, I need
to make sure that they are staying on task and
becoming distracted with all of the manipulatives.
Students need to be aware of expectations when we are
constructing things and will need to be reinforced of the
rules.
Daily agenda is on the board at the beginning of the day. This
allows for students to have prior knowledge on what is
expected which allows them to get into the math/art zone.
All Materials will be organized and ready so that when we begin
constructing it doesnt take aware from our
construction/creativity time.
Yesterday we played jeopardy and you were all able to show me
what you have learned over the past month. Today we get to
build a Santa using shapes and objects. Can I have you all sit
over at my chair so we can follow the instructions?

Building our Santa
NOTE: This activity is going to take majority of the class
and is meant to be taken step-by-step so that the
students can fully understand the directions and then
less confusion can occur with what students are
expected to do.
Ensure that students are aware that this is an I do
you do activity. Make sure that each step students are
fully watching. If this involved going over to the reading
corner so that students are not distracted, then thats
what has to happen.
When we go through each activity, ask students what
shapes and objects we are making when we are making

our Santa.
At each step students will be given the new color of
material so that they arent wasting paper. This will also
allow for less confusion.
Red Construction Paper for Body
White Construction Paper for Face
Black Construction Paper for Belt
Red Construction Paper for Hat band
Beard and pom pom - White Cotton Balls
Cut Paper arms, eyes, noses, belt, belt buckle,
mustache, hat etc.
1:
Have students grab a red piece of paper for the body.
Have students cut out a belt, and buckle and glue onto
the body.
2:
Have students get a piece of heavy white piece of paper
(manila tag)
Ask students to add a white face and a hatband.
Ensure that students are aware that when we bend out
paper into a cylinder, that we cant have the face too
spread out or his eyes wont be on the front.
3:
Add facial features.
Make eyes, noses and mouths, we can draw on
eyelashes as well.
Create 2 red circles for his blushing cheeks. What is the
best way to make two of something so that I get them to
look the same?
Do we want our eyes and cheeks to be too big? No, we
want to make them the right size so that we can fit all of
our facial features on.
Discuss what shapes we are going to use to create
these.

Step 4:
Add the beard.
The beard will be made out of cotton balls.
Students will be asked to only do the part that is around
the face.
Do we need to make the beard all the way around. Why
not?
Step 5:
Wrap the body into a cylinder.
Have the students glue the back of one side and roll it
to make a cylinder and glue it to the other side.
Step 6:
Make arms and hands for Santa
Rectangles for arms and circles or you can challenge
yourself to make mittens if you would like to. If I need to
of the same thing, how do I try to make them look the
exact same?
Step 7:
Make the Hat for Santa
Cut a triangle. Make sure that it is a tall triangle so that

we can fold it.
Fold the hat and glue it onto the back.
When students have completed the gluing I will give
them a cotton ball to use as a pom-pom for Santas hats.
Ensure that there is time for clean up and for students to put

Assessment: Formatively assess students on appropriate
completion. Students should also be able to identify the shapes
that we are using while constructing our Santas.

Discussion if what shapes/ objects we have used.

Have students point out what shape is where and
discuss how we know that is the shape.
Could we use other 3D objects or 2D shapes to
make this part of the body.

This activity allows for students to show what they have

learned these past few weeks. Students will be assessed
on how well they answered the question (Was it right or
was it wrong?) and if they contribute the correct answer
to class discussion.
Students will be formatively assessed on their participation
within the discussion. This lesson is crucial to ensure that
students are able to identify 2D shapes and 3D objects in
everyday life.
Closure
If time, have students point to all the shapes that we have
used to build out Santa. This can be seen in Learning activity 2
as well.
If students can recall all of the shapes and objects that we
have learned, they clearly can understand when 3D objects
and 2D shapes in everyday life. This also leads into the grade 2
outcome of constructing 2D shapes and 3D objects.
Great work today boys and girls. All of your Santas look
marvelous. You are great builders in science and you can build
shapes and objects to build with too! Did you all like making
your Santas?

Activity/Activities

If there is a wide range of students finishing, I will have students that are
finished gather around the reading circle so that we can read a Santa based
story.

Reflections from the

lesson

Students loved their Santas! The best thing that helped this lesson work
out so well was that I broke up this activity into many steps. This allowed for
students to stay focused and not get confused. I was able to keep the
classroom under control even though students were always doing
something. I was able to keep all ranges of students busy keeps all ranges
of students busy and learning. Students were engaged and were able to
show their knowledge on shapes while doing something festive. My time
management was a little off but students were able to finish at an
appropriate spot so that all students were able to keep up and still have a

beautiful Santa. I am so proud/feeling so confident with how this lesson
turned out. I feel like this was a very strong lesson while still being creative.
This is something that I have been trying to successfully do all practicum.
