Unit 1: Family (A famlia)


Lesson One: Family photos (Fotos de famlia)
Objective:
Students will be able to determine who family members are from a photo album and will
be able to answer questions about them.
Materials: Family tree with labels in TL and English

Input (20 minutes)
A slide show of a family. Ask students to name each person and give them give them an
age. Use descriptive words to give each person more characteristics. Ex. intelligent,
nice, friendly, adorable, hard to get along with, shy, funny, cute, tall, short. At end show
Youtube video then go back to slide show and ask in circular question style. Slides
should also include extended family and pets.
Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Activity 1
Ask general questions about the family in the slides. Who they are, their ages, how are
they related etc.
Activity 2
Students work together to describe family members to one another
Activity 3
Students are given magazine families. They then work together to create short story
about an imaginary family.

Students write a description of their own family from them to their grandparents.

Students, in pairs, read their writings and compare and contrast their families.

Lesson Two: Whos who? (Quem quem?)
Objective:
Students will be able to talk about family members (using possessive adjectives), telling
their age, their name, and describe a characteristic.
Review (5-10 minutes)
Input (15-20 minutes)
Using a different family tree and slide show students will give each a name, role in the
family, an age and personal characteristics. This time with step parents and siblings
(step and half). Small grammar lesson on possessives.

Students will be asked for comprehensive purposes various questions.
Guided Practice (20 minutes)
Students will trade their writings from the day before with different partners. They will
read the samples and then they will write a small add-on. Students will then trade back
with their partner and they will draw their new family and label each member.
Independent Practice (30 or more minutes)
Students will think of two popular or well-known families around the world. These
families can be from television, the movies, cartoons, etc. Students will then draw
pictures or print off picture and they will label each member and give a description.
Closure (2-5 minutes)
Students will think of family tradition.

Lesson Three: The furry ones (Os peludos)
Objective:
1. Students will read some advertisements about animal shelters that talk about
pets that need good homes.
2. They will then answer a series of questions about the readings.
3. They will write a letter to a shelter describing which pets they want to adopt and
why.

Input (10 minutes)
Students will learn different types of animals and where they can be found. Students will
be asked various questions before they read just buy looking at the adverts. Students
then read each advert.
Ex. Hi, I'm waiting for you! Please adopt me. My name is Max and I am ten years old. I
am white and gray. I lost my owner because he died. I am lively, fun, and I get along
with children. I need lots of space because I love to run and play.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Students answer some questions about the reading and discuss what happened to
each pet.
Independent Practice (20 minutes)
Activity 1
Students draw their family pet or one that they would like to have. Then they will image
its in a shelter and write and advert describing the animal including:
Pet's name

Pet's age
o
A description of the pet
o
A description of the pet's character
o
Activity 2
Students will write a letter to a shelter describing which pets they want to adopt and
why.
Closure (2-5 minutes)
Students read the letters with a partner

Lesson Four: Birthdays (Aniversrios)
Objective
1. Discuss months and numbers related to birthdates.
2. Give information on different types of birthdays.
Materials
Birthday music in TL with printed lyrics
Input (15 minutes)
Students design and plan a birthday party for a friend by:

Creating a birthday invitation.

Deciding whos invited.

Choosing the food and drinks

Picking music and other activities

Buying gifts
Students will be given a graphic organizer to sort the info
Independent Practice (25 minutes)
Students make a comic strip to tell the story of what happened at the birthday party.
Closure (10 minutes)
Student tell each other about their parties. They are given writing homework to describe
how their family celebrates birthdays but also how they celebrate other holidays.

Lesson Five: Birthday plans (Planos de aniversrio)
Objective
1. Discuss how students families celebrate birthdays.
2. Design and create an invitation to a birthday party.
Start (5 minutes)

Independent Practice (50 minutes)
Activity 1
Studetns use what they had written as homework the night before to describe to the
class what their families do to celebrate. Activity will go as follows:
Students get into 4 groups
Each group given a squishy ball whoever has the ball presents.
When students finish in group they switch groups and present how other students
celebrate to new group of students.
Activity 2
As a class we plan a birthday party for students with birthdays that month and we
design what we need for a party. Each student volunteers to bring in birthday supplies.
Together they think of who to invite and half create invitations for those people while the
other half create birthday cards for the birthday people.
Closure (5 minutes)
Remind students of what to bring for the party

Lesson Six: Party time (Hora da festa)
All period
Everyone participates in the party. There are games, music, tv shows all in the TL.
Students are asked to take pictures and video to be used in future lessons
