Changes made after previous testing
After seeing user reaction on paper prototype, we changed some icons to
make it more familiar to the users. Apart from that, no major change was
made.
Briefing given to users
We mentioned that the device uses foldable display and the interface is supposed to be
holographic. We had also mentioned that the interface works the same way a normal
Smartphone/computer would. Other early notes include the explanations of some icons the
tested users were not familiar with.
In general, both users seemed to know the functions of most of the icons that came with the
basic form of our interface, as it is similar to that of a computer/Smartphone that exists
nowadays, at first sight, in spite of the fact that user #2 is an avid Apple user and is not well
acquainted with Windows interface. In comparison, user #2 grasped the fact that our
interface is holographic easier than user #1, this is probably due to the fact that user #2 is
well-aware and had already been informed several times beforehand about this. When it
comes down to the defining traits of our interface, both users seemed to have difficulties
operating from a function to another. Both users need our full assistance in explaining howstuffs-work step by step for each task.

Consent form
(empty)
Consent Form
You are being asked to take part in a Interview of use of a new design
interface for performing four tasks. Please read this form carefully for
more details.

What the Interview is about: The purpose of this Interview is to learn

how users can interact with our new device, named Minerva. It is a
device that has both a physical and holographic screen. The holographic
version is shown as desktop version in this prototype.

What we will ask you to do: If you agree to be in this Interview, we will
conduct an interview with you. In this interview, you will have to perform
four tasks using our interface design.

The tasks are as follows.

1. Studying on the go
-Just select one of the two interfaces, whichever you think is more suitable
to the task.
2. Doing group work on large screen
-Our prototype includes an option for expanding display size. Find the
display option
3. Doing 3-D design
-This option is also inside the display option. However, it can be accessed
in several other ways. Find out as many as you can, and tell us which one
you prefer.
4. Giving a presentation
- You do not have to give an actual presentation. You just have to find how
to do it using our system.

Taking part is voluntary: Taking part in this Interview is completely

voluntary. You may skip any questions that you do not want to answer. If
you decide not to take part or to skip some of the questions, you are at
your liberty to do so. This is not a test of you, this is a test of the interface.
If you decide to take part, you are free to withdraw at any time.

Statement of Consent: I have read the above information, and have

received answers to any questions I asked. I consent to take part in the
Interview.

Results from user testing

All users were given four tasks. They are as follows.
The tasks are as follows.
1. Studying on the go
-Just select one of the two interfaces, whichever you think is more suitable
to the task.
2. Doing group work on large screen
-Our prototype includes an option for expanding display size. Find the

3. Doing 3-D design

-This option is also inside the display option. However, it can be accessed

4. Giving a presentation
- The user do not have to give an actual presentation. You just have to find
how to do it using our system.

All of the users succeeded in completing all four tasks. However, there
were varying degree of delay. There were some texts in the consent form
that It was evident that the user interface design needs more supporting
documents and tutorials. However, lack of actual device made actual
demonstration video impossible. Instead of demo, the following four
images shows the user reactions to varying degrees.

Due to the absence of an actual 3-D designing tool and holographic

screen, users took more time in grasping the concept of the whole design.
However, all of them were able to complete the 4 tasks assigned for them.

Here is the mean and standard deviation of the time it took for them to
complete the tasks.

Conclusion:
A demo video could have been much easier for the users to understand.
However, using blender or justinmind gave the impression of a solid
rectangle instead of hologram. Hence, the concept of holography was only
described on briefing and only a still image could have been shown. The
overall impression was, the learning curve for understanding the User
Interface was bit high, which we would be able to avoid for any such
future designs.
All in all, we believe that our device will be usable and attractive with the
aid of tutorial videos. In future, when some of the design elements
become more common to everyone, then an actual demo video would
hopefully be able to make this design more appealing.
